When Wilco last played Houston in 2005, their critically acclaimed album, A Ghost Is Born, had recently been released, and they rode into town on a wave of support. 2007's Sky Blue Sky divided critics with its mellow, meandering rock, a far cry from the challenging and dynamic sounds of the Chicago-based band's previous albums. As if to directly address these critics, Wilco opened Friday night's stand at Verizon Wireless Theater with some of the most laid-back tracks from their most recent record.

Houstonist is happy that we secured our Wilco tickets a couple of months ago, now that tonight's show at Verizon Wireless Theater is sold out. Jeff Tweedy and company consistently make great albums, even if the style is inconsistent with each album. The Chicago-based band's latest, Sky Blue Sky, is a little more mellow compared to their last few releases, but this song, "Impossible Germany," (the video was recorded live) is one of the standout tracks of the album.
We’ve got a busy week on the concert front. Our favorite duo from New York arrives at The Meridian tomorrow night. They Might Be Giants have been making quirky alt/pop songs for grown-ups over 20 years now, and a few albums for the kids that us grown-ups enjoy, too. Wilco’s Friday night show at Verizon Wireless Theater is sold out, but if you’re willing to pay a little, you can still get your hands on some tickets (believe us, it’s worth it). Finally, a great double-bill Monday night with Yo La Tengo opening for My Morning Jacket, also at Verizon. We're in concert heaven!
Unfortunately, our pick of the week has already aired. Kimya Dawson and Adam Green of the Moldy Peaches performed our favorite song from the Juno soundtrack, "Anyone Else But You," on The View this morning. We're hoping it'll pop up on The View's website or on Youtube soon.
Hey Houston, do you want your MusicTV? No, we’re not talking about the reality TV channel of the same name, although we admit we have watched that ridiculous Lauren-Heidi melodrama on occasion. (Actually, we don't miss an episode, but we're not proud of ourselves!) Each week, we’ll give you the 411 on televised music performances that are so good, they’ll almost make it worth your while to sit through Jay Leno’s monologues! Monday -ABC, 11:05pm:...
Protest over national vs. regional chains, the never-ending debate over the place of cars and bicycles in our metropolises, professional sports scandals, remembering a solemn day, and being issued a search warrant - it all happened across our sites this week! Another banner week at Chicagoist started off with daily reports from food writer Lisa Shames on her attempt to eat only locally grown and raised foodstuffs all week as part of a farmers market...
Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse. The deaths of two firefighters shook Bostonist this week. Boston's firefighters bent over backwards all week long - first, they fought flames pouring from the Boston Tea Party museum, and then a restaurant fire killed two and injured many more. Their efforts make everything else - like Tom...
The first day of June, which means summer is upon us. It also means that it's time for another Houstonist iMix! Here's a collection of what Houstonist is currently listening to. We're ready for summer to begin (minus the extreme heat, humidity, and hurricane potentials), so we started the mix out with a few party songs: a new one from L.A. Latin/rock band Ozomatli; a classic summer song from Jimmy Buffett; a catchy hip-hop song...
Jay Farrar and Son Volt are playing what will most likely be a sold out show at the Continental Club this Sunday night. They're touring on the heels of their latest release The Search, one of their most critically acclaimed releases in years. Son Volt was created in 1994 by vocalist Farrar, soon after the breakup of the influential altt.country band Uncle Tupelo. While Son Volt's first album spawned this minor hit "Drown," they...
Tuesday A good night for the acoustic-minded. The San Francisco Bay Guardian claims that if you were to combine Iron and Wine with Elliott Smith, you’d get Meric Long / Dodo Bird. Throw in some Wilco-styled vocals in there, and whammo – you have a great band. 8 p.m. at The Proletariat | tickets and info Like any serious, country-leaning singer/songwriter, Robbie Fulks has a bone to pick with Nashville, but it doesn’t consume...
Tody Castillo is no stranger to the Houston music scene. He’s been performing around town for the past 10 years, both with bands and solo. Last year was a milestone for him: his self-titled debut album was the best-selling album at Cactus Music & Video in 2005 — even beating out international stars like Coldplay. Houstonist caught up with him for some coffee at Café Brasil (where he plays live tonight). You’ve been compared to...
