So, Houston cable subscribers, the much-talked-about day is here: Today, Time Warner cable service in the city officially becomes Comcast cable service. Feel any different yet? You probably won't unless you go looking for the TV Guide Channel or west coast feeds of the Disney Channel and Encore, which have been dropped from the cable lineup. In their place are 20 new channels, some of which KHOU has listed: high-definition versions of Starz, The Golf......

Good morning, Houston. Thanks to KHOU, we have a couple more details on the coming switch from Time Warner to Comcast cable — sort of. Next week, 20 new channels will come to the Houston cable market, including five HD channels — but Comcast isn't saying what they are (aside from ESPN HD and the NFL Network, which should appeal to you sports fans). Up to this point, the most visible result of the......

A couple of weeks ago, Houstonist was downtown and noticed a film crew setting up lights, cameras — and, presumably, action — at the corner of Louisiana and Rusk. We wondered in passing what was going on, but we figured it was just Time Warner shooting another of its asinine commercials with a guy in a space suit or a businessman who says "Click! Boom!" for half an hour. In reality, though, what we......

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. My husband and I went out to dinner last night. The restaurant was valet only, and it cost $6. We didn’t really mind until we watched the attendant park the car just a few feet from where we were standing. Then, after dinner, we had to give a different valet guy a few dollars for a tip when he retrieved our car. Seems......

The times, they are indeed a-changin' in your cable box, y'all. Just when you were getting used to groaning at the horrific Time-Warner commercials, which we think were meant to be "cute" and "quaint" but actually just looked "terribly unprofessional" and "dumb", your Time Warner cable is becoming Comcast. So, now that we've brought you up to speed, what does this actually mean for Joe Houstonist, cable subscriber? Well, not a heck of a lot......

This summer, we heard about Comcast replacing Time Warner as our local cable company, and word back then was that the switch wouldn't happen until after the first of the year. Well, barely: The Chronicle reports that Comcast will take over Jan. 1, though we won't really see changes until later. Comcast officials said they don't want to make any abrupt changes that might scare people away from cable and over to satellite TV —......

Police in Galveston are looking for a guy who cut some customers' cable lines. No big deal, right? Well, yeah, in this case it is: The suspect used a backhoe to destroy fiber-optic lines, disrupting cable and Internet service to about 23,000 customers in Galveston, Jamaica Beach and Tiki Island on Sunday. Houstonist sees we're not the only ones fed up with Lifetime's parade of crappy Christmas movies. According to The Galveston County Daily News,......

Time Warner exiting and Comcast entering the Houston market is now official. The planned switch is bringing up more questions from customers. The most pressing issue is for Time Warner Road Runner internet customers. Those who use “houston.rr.com” will most likely have to change their e-mail address to Comcast’s standard next year. As we all know, changing your e-mail address sometimes means losing touch with people who you haven’t been in contact with in a......

Yesterday, reporters received early word that Time Warner will be leaving the Houston market and Comcast will take over the operations locally. The official announcement happens today. The news came from an internal e-mail at Time Warner. What does this mean for Houstonians? We’ll know more later as time goes on. But we compared rates with a city that has Comcast, Boston. Here, Time Warner charges $48 for standard digital cable service; in Boston,......

Our favorite Marvin Zindler reported a consumer complaint story about how Time Warner Cable has introduced a one dollar surcharge for customers who pay their bill at one of Time Warner's stores. This was met with some reproach by low income clients who said they feel the pinch of the extra weight on their bills. Zindler is known for airing consumer complaints (mostly against corporations), and coming out the winner, no matter what or......

Last night Mayor White, Richard Lewis (the city's Chief Information Officer... not that other guy) and the High Tech Texan hosted a conference call for bloggers about the city's plan for a city-wide 802.11g wireless network. A conference call with bloggers? It isn't a bad idea, considering the technology, though some have noted the call's shortcomings. We just want to point out that Laurence Simon didn't have the hairballs to admit he was from isfullofcrap.com,......
