Weekend-ist April 10-12: Mango's, Outdoor Shows, Bohemeo's

  • 7 p.m. — Mango's re-opening. The tiny cantina at 403 Westheimer which has been closed since Hurricane Ike has a facelift and new personality. The sign now proclaims it a cafe, bar, live music venue and vegetarian restaurant. Sounds good. It's grand opening is tonight featuring Two Star Symphony, Robert Ellis, I am Mesmer, and The Sideshow Tramps. Cost is $8 after 8 p.m. The website has a full listing of shows almost every night in April.
  • 10 p.m. — The Light Rock Express will be playing the songs your parents loved for free at the Big Top, 3714 Main Street.

Remember our blathering about salons? Well, another modern salon was just brought to Houstonist's attention, and this one happens every month. The Spacetaker SPEAKeasy is the third Wednesday of each month, during which the local arts organization hosts two or three creative personalities from a variety of disciplines (literature, art, music, etc.). Those artists are invited to participate in an informal dialogue or presentation about their work, followed by a Q&A session. The goal is to give the audience an idea of the presenter's creative process and to also introduce local and budding creators to one another in the hopes of fostering collaborations. Tonight's guests are Houston-based author and blogger Gwendolyn Zepeda, who will speak about how she started her writing career, and Julia Claire Wallace, the Houston-born painter who is also the creator of sexyATTACK. She'll speak about her performance-based work, which deals with sexuality and body ideals. Spacetaker SPEAKeasy with Gwen Zepeda and Julia Claire Wallace

Daily-ist Tuesday: Craft Night at Caroline Collective

Craft Night has become a bimonthly happening over at Caroline Collective, and while in it's early stages the event was mostly an excuse for crafty types to get together and work on personal projects, it's now become a more community-minded event, with local arts organizations offering creative how-tos, and local creatives offering their skills for those organizations.

Daily-ist Thursday: Cultured Cocktails

It's been a busy week for Daily-ist, so we suggest you take the night off tonight.

Want to support the local arts scene in Houston, but wish there was more liquor involved in your patronage? Then head over to Beaver's Icehouse tonight for the kickoff of Cultured Cocktails from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sponsored by New Living and Spacetaker, this series of happy hours held each Thursday will benefit a different arts non-profit group each week.
