Is Shane Battier the Best Player in the NBA?

Well, probably not. But he's damned good. And Michael Lewis of the New York Times, best known for his book Moneyball (about the stat-obsessive front office of the Oakland A's), is out to prove that Battier may be the Rockets' most valuable player, and the focal point of GM Daryl Morey's mad genius schemes.

>> Poll shows split over Clemens, McNamee: The court of public opinion currently stands divided in Harris County regarding the Roger Clemens steroid scandal according to a poll by The Chronicle. According to the results published yesterday by David Barron, 35.5 percent said believed McNamee; 32.8 percent sided with The Rocket; and, 31.7 percent did not respond. The margin of error is listed at 4.1 percent. These numbers may prove initially encouraging for Clemens with a Justice Department investigation looming in his future. However, the data seems to indicate that his support base is less educated than McNamee's. Does it really seem hard to believe that someone kept a beer can, dirty gauze and a used syringe for seven years?

The Houston Rockets returned home last night, fresh off of an eight game road winning streak, to host the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers in a nationally televised match up. With Western Conference foes such as the Suns and Lakers making headline roster moves to improve their stock in an extremely competitive Western Conference, the Rockets were quickly becoming an afterthought as they fought for the final playoff seed.

The Rockets have been afflicted with shooting woes on a couple of occasions already this season. But the injury bug had stayed away so far, leaving many people optimistic about the team's chances for a high playoff seed in the Western Conference. But then Tracy McGrady's elbow barged in to the discussion. In the waning seconds of a disappointing first half against the Lakers at Toyota Center, T-Mac collided hard with Lakers forward Luke Walton...

It's no secret that there are many in the Houston sports scene who feel that the decision to trade the rights to one Rudy Gay to Memphis in return for perennial role player Shane Battier was a mistake. Rudy Gay is, in his second year, averaging 19.7 points and 4.2 rebounds. Last night the two had a chance to go head to head when the Rockets visited FedEx Forum. Fortunately for Rocket fans, Gay racked...

The Rockets have come back from a loss to Dallas with an impressive win against the defending champion San Antonio Spurs. The Rockets came out with a quick spurt put on by Shane Battier who came out of the gates with back-to-back three pointers. Other than that, the first quarter was uneventful with the exception of Chuck Hayes getting an elbow to the eye from Tim Duncan that required him to get stitches, forcing...

It has begun, the 2007-2008 season is here. Actually it didn't really start for the Rockets until the end of the first quarter last night against the Los Angeles Lakers. Houston started off very slow as if they didn’t realize the season had actually begun. Kobe Bryant took control of the first quarter while McGrady and company struggled to find their identity. A new coach and a few new faces on the pine will...

The Rockets faced a surging Celtics squad in Boston on Wednesday night and beat the crap out of them (technical sports term) 111-80. The Celts entered last night's action having won four of the last five games. Conversely (no, not the shoes), the Rockets had dropped four of the last five thanks in part to the absence of Yao. Yao Ming was relatively quiet in his second game back following the leg fracture finishing with...

Stop me if you've heard this one before: Houston team in dire need of some fireworks, strategically and PR-wise, has an eye-popping talent fall into its lap on draft day. The city raises its voice in victory, looking forward to the totally rehabilitated season ahead. Then, the unthinkable: the franchise opts for good sense and sound planning over a thousand hours worth of dynamism. Okay, so Rudy Gay isn't exactly Reggie Bush, the Rockets hardly...
