In case you hadn't heard, Steve Goodman can no longer lay claim to the "best country and western song ever written." That tarnished crown now rests squarely on the head of Hayes Carll. The song in question? "She Left Me For Jesus." With lyrics like "It could been Carlos or Billy Ortez / But if I ever find Jesus, he's gonna wish he was dead," it's easy to see why Carll is being hailed as......

Houstonist headed out to The Showgrounds at Sam Houston Race Park this past Sunday to catch skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk's traveling extreme sports show, the Boom Boom HuckJam. The weather was scorching hot but we braved the heat along with about a thousand other folks to see the show which included skateboarders, bmx bikers and motocross stunt riders. We even got a chance to see Tony Hawk prior to the show. Check out our pics!......

The Vans Warped Tour is coming to town this Sunday, July 6th at Sam Houston Race Park. Since 1995, shoe manufacturer, Vans, has sponsored this all day music and extreme sports festival which in the past has boasted up to 100 bands in a single show. In 1998 the festival went international with dates in Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada. This year, on the Houston stop of this festival, over 40 bands will be......

Veteran singer-songwriter and one of Houston's favorite sons, Robert Earl Keen stands tall among such other Texas artists as Jerry Jeff Walker, Rodney Crowell, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Joe Ely as an example of how to achieve longevity in the country music business without ever having a Nashville hit. Keen is a down-to-earth, engaging and distinctive songwriter with a huge fan base that follows him from honky tonks to stadiums and joyously sings the lyrics......

This week, don’t be looking for the big, A-list concerts, but that doesn’t mean that there’s a void of good live music choices. Last week’s big winner at the Houston Press Music Awards, The Dimes, will be playing at The Proletariat with several other bands Friday night. Sam Houston Race Park continues their summer concert series with Cory Morrow the same night. Saturday, you can take a step back into the 80’s with legendary......

We really wish Gomez was performing a headlining show here, but we have to settle with them just being an opening act for The Fray (along with Eisley) this Friday night in The Woodlands. However, Gomez is playing a stand-alone show Saturday night in Austin, if you're lucky enough to find tickets for it. Some veteran Houston acts play around town this week. Beaumont's Clay Walker will perform after the races at Sam Houston......

80's hair band Poison is coming to Houston tomorrow night. Believe it or not, they'll be playing at the Sam Houston Race Park tomorrow night after the horse races are over. (We want to call that a career low, but since the track hosted the great Merle Haggard recently, we can't justify that claim.) Poison had a good run of hits from '87 to '92 ("Talk Dirty to Me," "Every Rose Has It's Thorn,"......

Coincidence? We think not. 8 p.m. at Super Happy Fun Land | tickets and info On L.A. rappers Jurassic 5’s (there are actually six of them) latest release, they team up with Dave Matthews Band. Not something you’d expect from a hip-hop......

Houstonist knows what you're thinking. It involves the word "redneck" and possibly something about glittery cowboy hats, line dancing, and lyrics about dead dogs/trucks/relationships. And, dear reader, you may be right. But if you stop looking there, you're bound to miss some of the most original artists on the market today. Not all the women look like Xtina, and you might not want to talk politics with Toby Keith (he's actually a democrat!), but......
