Folk Legend Bert Jansch, who has influenced artists from many genres, including Neil Young (who refers to him as the acoustical version of Jimi Hendrix), Devendra Banhart, Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Johnny Marr (The Smiths), Nick Drake, Beth Orton, Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Mike Oldfield, will make a rare live appearance at the Orange Show. Infused with American folk, blues and Traditional British Isles music, his style is singularly unique and his song-writing very affecting.......

Houston native singer-songwriter Billy Preston has died at age 59. Preston was the only artist to receive label credit on a Beatles single, and his collaborations with the Fab Four over the years gave him the "fifth-Beatle" nickname. Preston continued to work with George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr after the Beatles breakup. He also joined the Rolling Stones on tour in the early 70's. As a solo artist, he's best known for......

There's a whole wide world out there, and here's the proof: DCist revels in The University of Maryland's basketball triumphs, marvels at Metro's security strategy, and applauds DC local Katie Couric's new gig. After lots of debating and a few bloody noses (OK, OK, Arcade Fire’s album was technically released last year, so we won’t include it — geesh!), we finally settled on our favorite albums of the year, in no particular order:......

More bad news for Tom Delay (R-Sugar Land)… it seems that if he ran for election today, he’d lose to an unknown Democrat. The question was: If Tom DeLay runs for re-election in 2006, in general, are you more likely to vote for the Republican candidate Tom DeLay or for the Democratic Party's candidate for Congress? Tom DeLay: 36% The Democrat: 49% Voters' Opinion of Tom DeLay: Favorable: 37% Unfavorable: 52% Unfamiliar: 11% Of course,......

It seems America just can't get enough Cats. The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, which played for 92 years on Broadway and has toured more than the Rolling Stones, hits Houston again just in time for the holidays — yes, yes, yes! We can hear you celebrating now! Cats rolls into the Hobby Center tonight for a two-week run, so you can catch those crazy Jellicle cats (in case you were wondering: No, "Jellicle" doesn't......

After a jam-packed holiday week of live music, things are slowing down a bit this week on the concert scene. Never fear, Houstonist has some suggestions to fit whatever mood you’re in: Today Many say Jason Mraz is much better live than on CD. You can decide for yourself as the pop singer/songwriter showcases material from his latest CD Mr. A-Z (get it?) tonight. His opening acts are worthwhile, too: James Blunt (huge in the......
