Houstonist rolled back our clocks on Saturday afternoon (proactive folks that we are). Today, we've jumped into the Way Back Machine to let you in on a Flick your folks may have seen in the theater - The Sugarland Express. This 1974 film is the big screen major feature debut for flash-in-the-pan Steven Spielberg. The fledgling film maker uses stars Goldie Hawn and William Atherton (the annoying reporter of Die Hard fame) to tell......

Kevin Everett may soon be a walking miracle. Just weeks after a brutal on-field collision almost killed him, and his doctors were convinced he would be a paraplegic, Everett was moved today from a Buffalo-area hospital to a rehab facility affiliated with Memorial Hermann Hospital. The goal: to have him walking within the next several weeks. A quick response by the Buffalo Bills' team doctor is credited with giving Everett the fighting chance he has......

Good morning, Houston. In case you didn't hear yesterday, we'll soon see the end of an era in air travel: Beginning Oct. 2, Southwest Airlines will assign passengers a place in line based on the order in which they check in. That means no more of the airline's (in)famous "cattle call" boarding process, which means there's no longer any point in arriving at the airport 16 hours early to get in the A group......

This past Sunday, Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett was very nearly paralyzed in a brutal on-field collision during the Bills' game against the Denver Broncos. Doctors originally thought that chances of a full recovery were 80-90% against, with a strong possibility that he would be a quadrapeligic; today, the Port Arthur-raised Everett is moving his limbs and breathing on his own, and his family and doctors are optimistic for a full recovery. Everett played......

Good morning, Houston. As you might have noticed, we passed the night sans Humberto — but our friends in the Beaumont area weren't so lucky. The sudden hurricane made landfall early this morning and battered Beaumont with winds up to 62 mph and Orange with gusts of up to 85 mph, the Chron's Eric Berger reports. From across Southeast Texas came reports of knee-deep water, downed power lines and damaged buildings, including an apartment......

It’s that time again: Our chance to share some of our favorite music with you on our monthly Houstonist iMix. This month spans 20 years – from “Dirty Diana” to “Earth Intruders.” The latter, Bjork’s latest single, is definitive Bjork. Other new music includes Southern-indie darlings Kings of Leon, a great album cut from the latest Modest Mouse CD, and multi-talented instrumentalist/vocalist/songwriter Andrew Bird, and alt-pop musician Khaela Maricich, who, for some reason, calls herself......

Good morning, Houston. Did you read the Chronicle over breakfast this morning? We're sure the paper is thanking you: According to the Newspaper Association of America, the Chron lost 2 percent of its circulation in the six-month period ending in March. That's really not so bad compared with drops among some of the other biggest papers in the country: 3.5 percent for The Washington Post, 4.2 percent for the LA Times and a whopping......

There's been no peace of mind for our friends in Texas City lately: First they had to deal with exploding apartments, then Jesse Jackson came back, and now there's word that the city's levee system might not stand up to a powerful hurricane, which could affect nearly 5 percent of the nation's oil refining capacity and thousands of homes. And we thought the Jesse Jackson thing was bad! The Chronicle looked at the Texas......

Last night, a SWAT team responding to a Channelview man's threat to blow up his mobile home ended up in a several-hour standoff with the guy — and it turns out he wasn't even in town. It all started when Harris County sheriff's deputies got a call from a woman who said her husband, Erik Wade Martinez, assaulted her; when she called Martinez to tell him she wanted to get some of her belongings out......

Houston has been showing up on all kinds of lists lately: it's the hardest city to navigate, the worst at picking up pet poop, the fifth most toilet-clogged city — and now, when it comes to mail carriers, we're the dog-bite capital of the country for the fifth year. The distinction is based on dog attacks reported by mail carriers across the country. In fiscal year 2005, the most recent period for which statistics are......

And now it looks like C's advocates will have to find a new cause: Pimp C, aka Chad Butler, will be paroled within 30 days. Pimp C was sentenced to eight years in jail for falling behind on community service after he pleaded......
