Unless you've just returned from a sabbatical taken underneath a rock, you'll have heard the news that Joe Horn, the Pasadena man who shot and killed two men who were robbing his neighbor's house, was cleared of any crimes by a grand jury yesterday. The decision came after seven months of private deliberation and public debate over a case that could have serious repercussions and set legal precedents for years to come.

Houstonist found this week's crop of Missed Connections sweet & torid but relatively dull until we found the Springer-tastic posts listed below.

From local Houston headlines, we bring you these weekend news bits...

Oy vey! The Missed Connections gods were with us this week and yielded the gem of a thread below about cheating in Pasadena. Picture Bud and Sissy as the two idiots lovers in question. If you have no idear what we're talking about, leave work now and watch Urban Cowboy - the documentary about life in Pasadena. To my BF in Pasadena - w4m - 40 If you don't call me tonight, don't ever...

With the official beginning of the 2007 hurricane season a little more than a week away, Harris County officials have released a new evacuation plan based on ZIP codes. Residents of coastal and low-lying areas can determine whether they're in evacuation zones using a map of the area that groups ZIP codes into four zones based on threat, from the coast up through Brazoria and Galveston counties to Houston's East End, Channelview, Baytown and...

Good morning, Houston. Can Texas gas prices get any higher? Well, sure — they increased for the 15th straight week last week, and now they're edging toward the previous record high. The average price of a gallon of regular unleaded in Texas last week was $2.952, just 1.2 cents short of the previous record, $2.964, which we hit after Hurricane Rita in September 2005. Houston's average price is $2.92, still lower than most major...

Native Texans Chris Sampson and Hunter Pence guided the Houston Astros to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday. With the game tied at one a piece in the fourth inning, rookie of the year candidate Hunter Pence demolished a Noah Lowry change up for a 400-foot home run onto the railroad tracks above left field to give the Houston team the lead for good. Chris Sampson, who 24 hours ago...

Frenchman Sébastian Bourdais took home first place at the Houston Grand Prix this weekend for the second year in a row. Oui, oui. But it sounds like a few Houstonians were a little too inspired by Bourdais' high speeds. Street racing at Spencer Highway and Beltway 8 is the probable cause of a 5-car crash yesterday afternoon.

Good morning, Houston. We forgot to mention a bit of news last week: According to ForbesTraveler.com, Houston is the sixth-best restaurant city in the country. "San Antonio may have a far more manifest Mexican food culture, but Houston, which spirals forever outward, has far more breadth and depth," the site said; it specifically cited upper-end Tony's, Café Annie and Américas, but also mentioned the Breakfast Klub, with its "irresistible" chicken and waffles. Mmm. >>...

In October of last year the (Silver Dollar) Jim West mansion was sold to Olajuwon Farms (the bucolic name of Hakeem's land management company). After sifting through archives, though, Linda Sansing, a teacher in Clear Creek ISD and co-founder of Preserved in Time (a nonprofit to help raise awareness of the West mansion), found a deed restriction that may prevent any tampering with the mansion until July of 2012. The Greater Houston Preservation Alliance's David...

Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. Looking back, Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 18th century poem may have been a bit progressive. As the world rallies around water preservation this month, Houston is doing our part, to make sure our H20 stays safe. Starting tomorrow (Friday) morning, the Dow Chemical Company, in partnership with the Blue Planet Run Foundation are sponsoring a 36-hour, 240-mile, overnight relay event around the Houston area to help raise...

Hey, guess what? It rained again yesterday — and we mean a lot, in case you didn't notice. Not only was there a bunch of rain, but also high winds and hail of all varieties: "I got a lot of reports of hail — pea-sized, marble-sized, from Sugar Land to Tomball out toward Pasadena, Hobby Airport, League City — dime-sized hail is being reported there," KPRC meteorologist Frank Billingsley said.

Good morning, Houston. We're ashamed to admit that, on occasion, we succumb to road rage — especially when we're staying within the speed limit and other drivers get right on our tail, flashing their lights and acting like we need to go faster. We've often been tempted to slam on our brakes and show the tailgaters what's what, but according to the Chronicle's resident police expert, maybe we shouldn't: HPD Sgt. Steve Copeland warns...

Good morning, Houston! Two, four, six, eight ... yeah, whatever, we weren't cheerleaders. But those of you who were (or those of you who are cheerleader fans — no more needs to be said about that) should be excited to know that Houston is one of the finalists to be home of the Cheerleader Hall of Fame. We're up against Ohio, Kentucky, California, Florida and another city in Texas for the Hall of Fame,...

Remember when gas was cheap? No, we're not talking about 10 years ago — we're referring to earlier this year, when the price of a gallon dipped well below $2 at some stations around town. Well, keep that in mind: It'll help you deal with shelling out $2 and change at the pump these days. According to AAA Texas, gas prices statewide rose for the second straight week this week, settling at an average...

Today, Preservation Texas named five Houston-area sites to its list of 2007's Most Endangered Places in the state: the River Oaks Shopping Center, River Oaks and Alabama theaters, the West Mansion in Clear Lake, the Capitan Theater in Pasadena and unprotected neighborhoods in Galveston. This year's list focuses on historic movie theaters, but all the sites made it for a reason — unfortunately: All of them are in imminent danger of being lost through demolition or neglect. We figured this would be a good time to introduce you to the local endangered sites you don't know about and update you on the ones you do:

I have a huge problem. I’m a big Bears fan (and a huge White Sox fan, but I’ll let that slide for the time being as to not open old wounds), but as this weekend approaches, I realized that I have nobody to watch The Game with. For years, I would be watching The Game with a few dozen other sweatpants-wearing, brat-eating, true Chicagoans — and for the first time in my first month as...

This show has been postponed due to the weather. We'll let you know when it is rescheduled. David Cobb knows how to throw a good concert together focusing on local music, and he’s doing it again tonight soon. Houston Calling is hosting their third music-filled Happy Hour tonight at the Proletariat. Tonight’s Eventually, the show will feature Arthur Yoria as the headliner. Yoria was born in Chicago but has called Houston home for quite a...

Today's helpful hint from Houstonist: If you owe tens of thousands of dollars in back child support, you might want to make sure you don't end up on TV. Jesus Silva found out the hard way — he was arrested yesterday for failing to pay child support less than 24 hours after being listed as one of the state's top child support evaders.

If this week didn't get off to as good a start as you might have liked, here's something that'll help put things in perspective: At least you didn't spend all weekend locked in the trunk of your car like one local guy did.

It's not that Houstonist doesn't love Pasadena, but we have always had the sneaking suspicion that we should take our own bottled water when we visit there. And it turns out we might not have been that far off base, according to a KTRK report:

Seriously, folks: If you have kids (or even if you don't), make sure your TV isn't in a place where it could easily tip over and fall on someone. At least six children in the Houston area have been killed this year by TVs falling on them, and two Pasadena kids nearly joined that list yesterday.

A man was arrested today after a six-hour standoff at a southwest Houston convenience store The average price of a gallon of gas in Houston dropped to $2.02 this week, marking the 11th straight week of price drops Ronald Williams, a 19-year-old cadet at A&M, claims he's been the victim of racial harassment from fellow cadets Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California called on the Justice Department to appeal the decision to overturn ex-Enron Chairman Ken...

Torontoist visits the site of a new Frank Gehry structure, stalks "the elusive Bahamas streetcar", and watches Tom Green get surgery. Phillyist rejoices in the Phillies' wild card chances, mourns the injuries sustained by Eagles defensive end Jevon Kearse, and goes pirate on our asses. SFist notes that Guns and Roses were in town, that San Franciscans are taking over reality TV, and that the San Francisco Chronicle's skills of original nomenclature could use some...

So we doubt we'll live to see the day when Texans give up their pickup trucks — but for a change, truck sales in Texas are almost flat this year compared with the same period in 2005, and it took dealers a longer time to sell trucks during the summer. Truck sales are better in Texas and Oklahoma than in the rest of the country because the oil business is doing well and companies are...

Less than a week ago, we were talking about how gas prices may fall to two dollars a gallon by the end of the month. Now there’s a report that with the help of today’s plummenting oil prices on the market, some states are already seeing below that two dollar mark. Here in Houston, its official: we’ve reached $1.99 per gallon. The cheap gas can be found at the same place we mentioned last week...

Even with the recent drops in the price of gas, it's still big news when you can get it cheap — which is why people get really excited when a gallon shows up for close to $2. That's what happened at a couple of stations at Yale and Crosstimbers yesterday: A Valero station at the intersection was selling gas for $2.16 a gallon, while it was going for $2.14 at a nearby Conoco. It's still...

From Pasadena comes the awful story of Endeliamar Garza, a 61-year-old woman with two kids: one a police officer and another an admitted drug addict who has reportedly confessed to stabbing her to death while burglarizing her house Friday. That son, 27-year-old Jose Luis Garza, was arrested early Wednesday morning at a friend's house.
