What would be the obvious career path for someone who went to Harvard for undergrad and Yale for law school? Well, write and publish restaurant guides, of course. Duh. Houstonist had the opportunity to sit with author/entrepreneur/foodie/publisher/world-traveller Robin Goldstein and his managing editor/foodie/marketer/public-relations-exec/S.O. Alexis Herschkowitsch. Robin has just released his Houston restaurant guide – Fearless Critic, Houston Restaurant Guide (one of the very first complete printed guides in Houston - and no, Zagat doesn't count).......

It's baaaaack. We can't believe it's been nearly six months since the last installment of the MFA's kick arse series, "Movies Houstonians Love." How the heck did we cope for this long with out it? Must be those doses of Mixed Media that held us over. Tonight marks the return of a new slew of presentations of some of Houston's own professing their love for their favorite flix. This series includes flick pix from the......

So, did you hear about Andre Agassi being in town over the weekend and raising about $300,000 for Simms Elementary school in La Marque? It was part of an Oprah Winfrey-sponsored reality show, The Big Give, in which participants compete to find the most creative ways to taken given amounts of money and multiply them so they can be given away to help others — in Houston, Agassi was competing against Tony Hawk, who held......

The Trinity Irish Dance Company, founded in 1990 by Artistic Director Mark Howard will be performing at Miller Outdoor Theatre this Saturday (St. Patty's, of course) at 8:00 p.m.. Admission is free, we suggest that you maybe pack yourself some Irish Stew and good Irish beer or whiskey and enjoy a night of progressive Irish dance. The company is non-profit and melds both traditional Irish dance and new means of expression into their performances. Many......

Well, not exactly, but it made for a damn good headline. So, after months of speculation, XM and Sirius satellite radio have merged. You can throw out all of those quarrels with your friends on which service is better, because soon it won’t matter anymore – all satellite owners will have Howard Stern, Oprah, NFL, and Major League Baseball, etc. What does this have to do with Houston? Well, with the current state of terrestrial......

We thought we might get some insight into convicted murderer Clara Harris's state of mind when she took the stand yesterday in the wrongful death trial brought by her in-laws — but it turns out we could have learned more form Oprah's jailhouse interview. Harris, who was convicted in 2003 of killing her husband, David, by running him down with her Mercedes, pleaded the Fifth, refusing to answer any of the 27 questions asked of......

As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder? Phillyist is concerned that the war on Trans fats could affect it's beloved cheese steak sandwiches, something for which we should all be concerned.......

Eric Cooper's trial for tampering with a government document, which begins this week, could end up just being about a man accused of signing his name to his ex-wife's car title without permission. But it could also open the door to a lot of grief for Cooper, the guy a variety of ex-wives and girlfriends say is a smooth-talking con man who built relationships on lies. Either way, we bet it'll be pretty interesting. If......

In college, Houstonist started the weekend like most other college students at our school – on Wednesdays. Maybe that explains our 2.1 GPA. Anyway, we’re keeping that tradition up with our first official Houstonist “Happyist” hour this Wednesday. Stop by one of our favorite bars, Poison Girl, between 6 and 8 p.m. this Wednesday, Aug. 2, and have a drink on us (until our tab runs out, that is). You’ll meet some of your......

We -ists are an eclectic bunch, but there's a couple of things we all love: famous people, social causes, and wacky local facts. Join us as we starf**k, get virtuous, and learn across the -ist network! Austinist starts us off right by filling the famous person quota by interviewing Lewis Black, covers the social cause with a non-profit car sharing company, and gives us more wacky local facts than we can handle with Austin by......

Gay Pride Week has been going on in Houston since 1978. This year’s parade is going to feature something that no Pride Parade has yet — a high school Gay Straight Alliance. The group from Conroe High School is going to be an official part of the parade, the highlight of this year’s week long festivities. To the gay community, the club's participation is important because the Houston GLBT Pride Parade and Festival's theme this......

Yesterday on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Angel Lane was unveiled after three months of construction by Habitat for Humanity volunteers and hurricane victims who have relocated to Houston. The project is a new subdivision — The Village of Glen Iris, located on South Main — that will be home to 50 families displaced by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The homes represent $2.5 million of a $5 million commitment to build homes with Habitat for Humanity......

We admit it, when we’re bored, Houstonist loves to browse the classifieds on Craigslist. It reminds us of our younger years, browsing through Greensheet to see what useless crap people were selling. However, we are surprised at some of the things that Houstonians consider “collectibles.” Here’s a few items that can be yours with a click of the mouse: Texas pride: Miller Lite Texas-shaped neon sign ($200), UT 2005 Champs Bud Light neon sign ($300),......

Houstonist has the feeling things are getting bad for James Frey, the author of the gritty drug-rehab memoir A Million Little Pieces. It all started Sunday, when The Smoking Gun published a report indicating that a lot of Frey's claims in the book — from his cocaine-fueled binges to his role in a train wreck that supposedly killed his only friend as a teenager — aren't true. That led to reports that big-name Hollywood talent......

Chalk up another victory for decent, moral Houstonians: KHOU decided to move tonight's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show to a late-night time slot in favor of an interview program with the perky Debra Duncan. Channel 11 is pre-empting girls in their nighties for a home-grown special of its own. KHOU morning anchor Debra Duncan is hosting In the Spotlight, which includes interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Ricardo Chavira (Carlos on Desperate Housewives) and model/actress Brooke Burns (Baywatch).......
