In our Retailist weekly feature, we share local places to satiate your shopping needs and feed your consumerist tendencies. Have a great place for us to get addicted to? Email us and let us know! Fashionistas, don't feel bad, this one kinda snuck up on us, too. And so glad it did. Earlier this year, after attending an event at Chloe Dao's Rice Village boutique, Lot 8, we made our way over to Mi......

This week is a little light on “big name” musical acts, but don’t let that get you down – there are still plenty of good local bands to see. Southern Rockers, Shinedown, are playing at Verizon Wireless on Wednesday. On Thursday you can check out Fulton Read, a strong new band from the Austin area, who is having their CD release party at Fitzgerald’s. Our pick for Friday is to see The Lemurs play......

Well, the peak pricing proposal for the Westpark Tollway died more quickly than we expected: On Thursday, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said the county commissioners will cancel the proposed doubling of Westpark tolls at rush hour, a decision that "was certainly influenced by the public's reaction." Under the proposal, transactions along the Westpark would have doubled from $1.25 (after a general 25-cent increase across the entire county toll road system to $2.50 from 6......

Houston law firm Fulbright & Jaworski is still in damage-control mode over a recruiter's use of language during a recent visit to Duke University. If you haven't heard about the incident, here's what happened: In the course of speaking with some Duke law students, an unnamed Fulbright attorney told a story about Leon Jaworski's defense of a black man on trial for murder in Waco in the 1920s (which we assume was the 1929 case......

Gov. Rick Perry is apparently fed up with questions surrounding his executive order requiring Texan pre-teen girls to be vaccinated for human pappilomavirus, a variety of viruses that cause most cases of cervical cancer: On Thursday, pressed with questions about the mandate while trying to promote a plan to sell the state lottery and use the proceeds to fund cancer research, Perry snapped at reporters. "I wish you all would quit splitting hairs, frankly, and......

So let's be honest: All weekend, you were sitting around thinking, "Sure, I'd like to know who the father of Anna Nicole's daughter is, but what I really wonder is: What's going on with Lisa Nowak?" Fortunately, the media provided a heathy dose of astronaut-related updates over the weekend. Here's what you might have missed: On Thursday, some friends had dropped by Nowak's Clear Lake home for a visit, according to an AP report carried......

All the reporters who came to town this week to watch Jeff Skilling testify in the Enron trial will have to wait: Skilling's testimony has been pushed back to at least Monday because of longer-than-expected testimony from former Enron General Counsel Jim Derrick. On Thursday, Derrick discussed ex-CEO Skilling and ex-Chairman Ken Lay's role in the company's operations, saying Skilling and Lay signed off on fudged annual and quarterly reports based on lawyers' and accountants'......

Houstonist was starting to think it was going to be a ho-hum, weird news-free day — but then we ran across the story of a girl who faked her own pregnancy, then kidnapped a baby. No, really. The girl is 17-year-old Jennifer Ruiz, a Katrina evacuee who told her family and her boyfriend she was pregnant. On Thursday, Ruiz visited a fellow Katrina evacuee who let her spend the night ad her apartment after Ruiz......
