Power is currently out at the intersection of Westheimer and Montrose, causing long delays at the lights since people can't seem to figure out how to take turns in a counter-clockwise fashion. (Houstonist traffic tip: the person to the right always goes first.) The outage is affecting restaurants and other businesses on all four corners, thwarting our attempts to get a Greek salad for lunch at either Biba's or Niko Niko's. Twitter user @Cortney just reported an outage at the Montrose/Fairview intersection as well as Inversion Coffee House just north of Fairview. Crews were on the scene at Westheimer. Meanwhile, other Montrose residents are reporting water outages due to city maintenance.

Start shutting down your laptop now, clown, and you may just make it to W. Alabama Ice House in time to catch the sunset with us as we sip suds (or something).
Congratulations, team. January is in the rearview mirror, and we're one month closer to the stifling heat and humidity that comes with early Spring (and sometimes late Winter) in the 713. Houstonist is concerned for your health and well being which is why we'd like to coach you on proper hydration and relaxation techniques.
Houstonist would like to help you non-planners with devising a strategy for your weekend. Step 1: start to relax now. Step 2: come to Happyist on Friday.
Houstonist's 3rd Annual Light Rail Pub Crawl is quickly approaching, which means you need to start training. Join us at West Alabama Ice House as we kick-off the new year (we're slow starters) on Friday, February 6th.
Houstonist had a staff meeting last night at a fairly new bar called Saint Danes, located in the old gas station where the original Late Nite Pie once lived. Houstonist World Headquarters is located in the Montrose and we'd been meaning to check out this neighborhood bar since it's well within stumbling distance.
If you're anything like Houstonist, you can easily waste two hours of your life on the trailer show on HDNet, watching trailers from movies past and present and exclaiming to no one in particular, "Oh, The Departed. That was a really good movie!" You know the trailer show... Don't look at us like that.
Ever since Houstonist heard that BB's Cajun Cafe -- a little bayou outpost right in the middle of Montrose -- was serving the traditional grillades and grits, we knew we had to get over there. Not that we hadn't wanted to try BB's prior to this -- after all, our friends were all raving about their roast beef po-boys, hurricanes, catfish and late hours -- but the grillades and grits sealed the deal for us.
...and nobody expects Spanish wines to be paired with traditional English food, but that's exactly what the avant-garde chefs over at Feast are doing on November 11th for their Armada Dinner.
Oh, how we wept and wailed when Ming's closed. We rended our garments in the streets, gnashed our teeth and decried the unfairness of it all. How could they move to Austin and leave us without convenient, if mediocre, Chinese food after a long night at Numbers?
You weren't happy with your close proximity to downtown, the Medical Center and the Museum District; your tree-lined streets and quaint houses; your dining options that run the gamut from upscale (Hugo's, Indika, Feast, Da Marco) to down-home (Baba Yega, Cafe Montrose, Ziggy's, Lankford Grocery); your endless thrift stores and antique shops and clothing boutiques; your quirky coffee shops and bars. It just wasn't enough, was it, Montrose? Now you want your own farmer's market, too?
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!
After many years at their location on Montrose just off of Westheimer, Ming's Cafe has shut it's doors for greener pastures in Austin. Austinist, take note and indulge in your new Chinese food overlords!

We're not entirely sure what to think about this week's shelterporn home, a contemporary North Montrose model. Is it a house with a beautifully clean and modern exterior? Why yes — but what's inside is even more interesting, not least because it features (gulp) shiny black ceilings. No, .
We hate most of the townhomes gobbling up inner-Loop neighborhoods these days: Many of them are bland, poorly constructed cookie-cutter houses that destroy the character of the neighborhood they're built in. Which makes it all the better when we run across townhomes, like these on West Alabama in Montrose.
Forty-years ago today a man with the dream was assassinated in Memphis but the effects were felt across the country. Martin Luther King, Jr. grew up as the son and grandson of a pastor and would become one himself in 1954. Ten years later King would become the youngest person in history to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end segregation in the fight against racism. King was killed after having addressed a rally of striking workers for years later. Killing the man did not stop the dream. But, the loss of King altered the realization of the dream of ending racism. It would be interesting to get his take on the current political, social and economic events in the US today - particularly with regard to the upcoming presidential election. Would King be happy with his legacy as it has been shaped by society, history and his supporters?
Houstonist reader Ben called our attention to a piece of modern architectural history for sale: John Zemanek's award-winning Japanese modern home off Richmond and Dunlavy. Zemanek, an architect who teaches at UH, built the house in 1968; it has received the Texas Society of Architects Honor Award, was featured in the Harvard Design Magazine and is listed in Stephen Fox's . Not bad.
::DRAG QUEEN BINGO!::
It's March now; the freakish weather is in full effect and your allergies are making you wish the spring was a figment of your imagination. What better way to celebrate than to go outside?
Westheimer Road is a long, thriving, paved snake of potholed infrastructure. It guides you into town from the Grand Parkway through Beltway 8 and Loop 610 until it brings you all the way into a cozy, little enclave of town we lovingly refer to as The Montrose. Not really the heart of Houston, because that would probably be the Medical Center, but more like the liver or one of the kidneys of Houston as...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor j-a-x. This is an incredible view from downtown of River Oaks, The Galleria area and beyond. It's an amazing image that must be seen large to really appreciate it. If you have a passion for Houston and photography, consider joining over 230 of Houston's best photographers in the Houstonist Flickr Photo Group. If Houstonist uses your photo for Photo Of The...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor Axelhouston who brings us this iconic random Montrose neighborhood shot. Street parking, plants in the ditch, the glow of the city street lights and lots of trees, pure unzoned bliss. All these things help bring together the uniqueness that is The Montrose. On a side note, directly to the right of the stop sign is the original locations of Barnaby's and...
