Texans DT Cedric Killings, who was almost paralyzed during Sunday's game against the Colts, arrived at the Texans practice facility yesterday, not to work out with his teammates, but to show them something none of them had expected: he was walking. A full recovery from the fractured vertebrae he suffered while attempting a tackle is expected, and he wanted the team to join in his celebration. Surgeons at Methodist Hospital stabilized Killings soon after the......

A couple of University of Houston stories for your Friday, so listen up Coogs. First, back on August 13th, Cougar offensive lineman Jarrod Butler collapsed while lifting weights in an on-campus weight room. It was later determined that he had suffered a heart attack as a result of an electrical abnormality in his heart. After spending the past two weeks under observation and treatment at The Methodist Hospital, Butler is being released today to return......

Good morning, Houston. If you happened to be in the Medical Center yesterday afternoon, we're pretty sure you noticed the natural gas leak. Even if you didn't see it, chances are you got caught in the massive traffic snarls it created after Main Street was closed between University and Sunset. Officials with The Methodist Hospital said a construction crew accidentally broke the gas line around noon, and it took most of the day to......

You may remember that we talked last fall about the Texas Medical Center testing its buildings for the effects of stray current from the MetroRail line — electricity leaks that Metro says are inconsequential, but that observers worry could be weakening the foundations of nearby buildings, bridges, roads and other structures. Well, the preliminary results of those tests are back, and they show worrisome levels of current at three sites. Does that mean buildings are......

A little news in the story of the Baytown woman who was killed late Saturday while her car was being towed from the RV park where she lived: First of all, according to the Chronicle, her name was Cathy Deemer Soileau, not Cathy Regina Deemer as was originally reported. The Harris County Medical Examiner's office figured out her true name using DPS fingerprint records; according to medical examiner's office spokeswoman Jennifer Coston, Deemer was listed......

Police are still investigating a fatal shooting aboard a Metro bus yesterday that was apparently triggered by a passenger bumping into another passenger. It happened around 11:45 a.m. on the No. 82 bus as it was inbound on Westheimer near Royal Oaks Club Drive: "The suspect was on the bus making his way through the center aisle when he brushed up against the victim," HPD Capt. Dwayne Ready told KPRC. The two exchanged words, and......

The Chronicle reports today that the University of Houston is taking the first steps toward starting a medical school, a move that would help address physician shortages in Texas and across the country — but could be an uphill struggle politically. The proposal for a UH medical school, drawn up by Kentucky medical school planners DJW Associates, calls for a starting class of 30 students with 15 basic sciences faculty members and six full-time clinical......

We talked the other day about MetroRail's ongoing problem with electricity leaking into the ground and claims that the stray current could be undermining the foundations of highways that cross the rail line. And now there's something else: According to KHOU, the Texas Medical Center is testing the foundations of several hospitals to make sure they haven't been affected. Stephen Swinson, president of Thermal Energy Corp., said tests of the foundations of a dozen buildings,......

If you can remember the beginning of this week — we say that because we're having a little trouble ourselves — you'll recall the implosion of Methodist Hospital's West Pavilion. Because Houstonist is such a fan of building implosions (and explosives in general), we were happy to see a variety of videos of the Methodist implosion show up online. But we have to say that this one, from YouTube user foxfaction, is our favorite.......

For months now, Methodist Hospital's West Pavilion Professional Building (some may have known it as Diagnostic Clinic), which was located between Main and Fannin streets near Holcombe Blvd., had been chipped away at while plans were in the works for the new Outpatient Center, which is part of the 2010 Leading Medicine vision: to be recognized as an academic medical center of the first rank that combines excellence in adult clinical medicine with leading-edge medical......

So if you're paranoid, here's something else you might want to worry about: Your car's heated seats could kill you. Yes, KHOU found a guy who suffered serious burns from his car's heated seats, which reached a scorching 165 degrees. Not to make light of his case, but is it sweeps week or what? Al Davis, who was paralyzed by a car accident 20 years ago, has a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee with heated seats.......
