::Texas Country Open Mic Night @ Blanco's::

Indie darling Jenny Lewis, famous for her songwriting both as a solo artist as well as with her band Rilo Kiley rolled through town on Wednesday night. There was a little drama when, after seven songs she cut off Trying My Best To Love You due to some talking. We could have done without her boyfriend Jonathan Rice's tasteless comment, "it was good enough for Austin and Dallas, but maybe Houston just can't hack it." That aside, however, we felt she handled it pretty well, moving forward and rounding out a pretty good set. We heard plenty of whining about the show afterward, so for those of you that felt differently, we have a couple suggestions:
  • If you're paying money to see a show, shut up and watch it.
  • If you think she was out of line, have some perspective - if you were on a tour bus all day, playing every night, you wouldn't want to deal with bullshit either.

Daily-ist Tuesday: Wheatfield Reunion at The Duck

Wheatfield was a band that formed in Houston in the 1970s after the three original members met during a talent show at Lamar High School. They played throughout Texas, headlining a young Austin City Limits, before disbanding in 1979.

H-Town Rock Interviews: The Pack A.D.

The Pack A.D. is a garage rock duo out of Vancouver, Canada whose sound is steeped in a healthy portion of the blues. The drumming of Maya Miller meets with the singing and guitar work of Becky Black to create an appealingly raw and visceral sound that calls to mind Son House, Janis Joplin, and The Black Keys. The band has released two records: Tinytype was self-released by the band in 2007 (re-released by Mint Records in2008) and Mint Records released Funeral Mixtape in 2008.

Daily-ist Monday: The Octanes

Forget those aging multi-million dollar album-selling world-touring pop stars. Houstonist thinks you should support local music. Start tonight by heading to Continental Club to hear The Octanes play. They perform a genre of music that is unique to our part of the country — mixing Rock-a-billy with Gulf Coast Blues. They've opened for Wanda Jackson! And their bassist Nick Gaitan (also of Los Skarnales) is a five-time winner of the Houston Press Music Awards Best Bassist category. Best of all, the event is free, and there will be drink specials.

The CYNICS have been around for 25 years now, born in 1983 at a small recording label is Pittsburg during the height of garage rock's second wave. Singer and mastermind Gregg Kostelich (who also owns Get Hip Records) has kept the band together through personnel changes, the coming and going of grunge music and whatever else a quarter-century of touring might throw at a band.

Houstonist plunked down some cash for a general admission ticket to see Kings of Leon Tuesday night in Houston. We braved event security, throngs of people and downtown parking to bring you these photos from last night's show!

Do you like Piña Coladas? Getting caught in the rain? Not into yoga? I'm sure you have a half a brain and with that half, you should head down to Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top on the 3700 block of Main to enjoy the smooth sounds of The Light Rock Express tonight.

Note: Due to impending weather from Hurricane Ike, please check the Discovery Green website for information regarding this event.

Synesthesia is defined as a sensation produced in one modality when a stimulus is applied to another modality, as when the hearing of a certain sound induces the visualization of a certain color.

Houstonist braved the heat, crowds, light rail trains, random panhandlers and city sidewalks to enjoy this year's Houston Press Music Awards Showcase. The event was held at various spots along Main St. and points beyond. We snapped photos of as many bands as we could but couldn't be everywhere, so here are some highlights from this year's event.

Houston's psychedelic rock band Indian Jewelry were featured Friday on Beware of the Blog, the mp3s-and-more website for New York's freeform radio station WFMU (highly recommended reading and listening on any day for music lovers).

Veteran singer-songwriter and one of Houston's favorite sons, Robert Earl Keen stands tall among such other Texas artists as Jerry Jeff Walker, Rodney Crowell, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Joe Ely as an example of how to achieve longevity in the country music business without ever having a Nashville hit. Keen is a down-to-earth, engaging and distinctive songwriter with a huge fan base that follows him from honky tonks to stadiums and joyously sings the lyrics along with him throughout his concerts.

Forty musicians performed the entire Sgt. Peppers album by The Beatles at Discovery Green, downtown’s newest park. The park was packed and people filled the hill and sat all the way up to the stage!

Bend Studio's Intimate Evening concert series continues tonight at NiaMoves in The Heights with a performance by Jake Shimabukuro.

When Wilco last played Houston in 2005, their critically acclaimed album, A Ghost Is Born, had recently been released, and they rode into town on a wave of support. 2007's Sky Blue Sky divided critics with its mellow, meandering rock, a far cry from the challenging and dynamic sounds of the Chicago-based band's previous albums. As if to directly address these critics, Wilco opened Friday night's stand at Verizon Wireless Theater with some of the most laid-back tracks from their most recent record.

Did you hear? Radiohead is coming back to town. Despite the fact that most bands decide to skip our fair city in favor of others, Radiohead is bucking the trend (like they're so known for these days) and making yet another stop at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on Saturday, May 17.

Houstonist has a special place in our hearts for The Last Concert Cafe on Nance - it was the fabled "knock or you won't get in" mystery Mexican Restaurant of our mispent youth. The location of many nights of live music, cold beer and hot food. Now, we're asking Houston to help the fine folks there raise money in loving memory of their granddaughter Aubrie Kristine Acosta who succumbed to SIDS on January 12th at three months of age. The Ronald McDonald House Charities helped the family and now they wish to give back to help others who may face similar circumstances. Joining the cause in this concert benefit are The Black Math Experiment, Live Oak Decline and Mo Pair & the Ugi Monks. Please, head over to The Last Concert Cafe this Saturday, February 9th beginning at 8:00 p.m. (you have time to have an early dinner!!!). Admission is only $10/per person, and 100% of all proceeds will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Houston/Galveston. If you are unable to attend and still wish to support the cause, please contact Brian Tafton at The Last Concert Cafe 713.226.8563, please.

They tell us we should always dance as if no one is watching, but this weekend a big group of dancers will be dancing away at the Rice Student Union Center (6100 Main) with or without you in the audience.

Spent all your cash on girlie drinks and shattered dreams again this weekend, didn't you? No worries - Thriftster gives you the lowdown on cheap stuff to do until Paycheck Friday.

Chris Simpson has worn many different hats in his musical career. He's first and foremost a songwriter, but he's been behind some of the most influential Texas bands of the last ten years. From emo pioneers Mineral (back when emo wasn't a dirty word) to the highly evolved rockers The Gloria Record, Simpson has cast a long shadow over the Austin musical scene. But eventually, you just want to hang out with your friends and...

The Day After Thanksgiving (aka Black Friday) has got to be one of the most stressful days of the year, with pent-up aggression and lingering turkey hangovers spilling into the crowded aisles of retail centers all over the city. After a day of fighting the unwashed hordes, you'll need a place to unwind and release some of that stress. If a cup of oolong and a Bach concerto isn't the antitode you're searching for,...
