On this lazy, semi-holiday, it feels like the perfect opportunity to browse around the 'net and find out what's been going on with our local teams. Only the Rockets are actually playing games right now, though the Astros are gearing up for theirs in Florida right now. The Texans continue to be a topic of discussion even though the NFL draft is yet two months away. With that in mind, let's take a look at what's been happening:

The revamping of the Astros roster is starting to look more and more like an episode of Extreme Makeover. Today, the Astros announced that they've reached an agreement with the Baltimore Orioles for former MVP shortstop Miguel Tejada in exchange for (deep breath): Luke Scott, Matt Albers, Troy Patton, Dennis Sarfate, and Lou Costanzo. Patton, Sarfate, and Albers are all young pitchers with some major league experience; Patton was the Astros' most experienced and highest-rated... more ›

The Astros made a decisive move today, firing manager Phil Garner and general manager Tim Purpura. Mired near the bottom of the NL Central all season, changes of some sort were necessary. Owner Drayton McLane stated that "a fresh start" was needed, and it's hard to argue with him. Bench coach Cecil Cooper will cover Garner's duties as manager, and Astros president Tal Smith will take over for Purpura. Cooper has been mentioned for the... more ›
The Chicago Cubs (and their inexplicable legion of local fans) arrived Monday at Minute Maid Park on top of the NL Central division, ready to put some distance between themselves and the Brewers in the standings. The Astros had other plans. Led by strong pitching performances by Wandy Rodriguez, Woody Williams, and Roy Oswalt, the Astros swept the series and bumped the Cubs below Milwaukee in the NL Central race. The offense was on for... more ›

This place is always packed with patrons hunkering for their fruit bowls. Fruit bowls people! The fruit bowls are only $5 and come in a plastic bowl piled... more ›

Well, here we are, staring down the 11th hour of holiday shopping — which we suppose makes this the 10th hour, though no one really calls it that, do they? Whatever the hour is, we have a shockingly low percentage of our holiday shopping finished. As Houstonist scrambles around picking up last-minute gifts, we thought we'd share some of our gift ideas with you. Before you ask whether our ideas are things your friends and... more ›
Big news from the Juice Box! Craig Biggio and Houston Astro's announced a deal today that will keep him an Astro for his 20th season. The single season deal is valued at just over $5 million dollars and will insure that Biggio is an Astro when he reaches 3,000 career hits. Biggio needs only 70 hits to reach the batting milestone. Houstonist is no mathematician, but we've done some spreadsheet wrangling with the last... more ›
