For the weekend of March 18th - 21st, 2010 While we may be up in Austin this weekend, that doesn't mean we took the music with us. There's an avalanche of shows in good ol' H-town, so go see a few and help some of the touring bands make a buck or two. Life on the road is tough, folks. more ›

Welcome to yet another installation of Rock Talk! It's been too long, but we have to blame our day job for that transgression. In the meantime, Houstonist has a boatload and then some of music news for you all. Someone find us a bigger boat. more ›

For the week of March 15th - 17th, 2010 As the Space City Rock showlist says, 'Welcome to Hell.' We don't even have a word to accurately describe the plethora of music that will hit Houston this week. Actually, plethora is pretty good, but it doesn't really do justice to the devastating avalanche of live shows that will sweep across our landscape over the next seven days. Don't get us wrong, Houstonist loves the SXSW fallout - it brings us many bands that otherwise would never set foot in the state, much less our fair city [e.g. the all-Aussie lineup at the Mink on Tuesday]. We'll try to give some details where we can, but know that the default option for the week will be Super Happy Fun Land's Overflow Fest [note each show is $8, or you can shell out $25 and hit any show through March 24th]. more ›

This week Houstonist made the drive to catch up with energetic Eastside pop-punkers <InsertNameHere> at their practice space in Galena Park [yes, you read that right]. They're dropping a new album tomorrow at Bohemeo's, so we thought we'd get to know them a bit better. You can listen to the full audio here. more ›

Houstonist was fortunate enough to be invited over to KTRU to listen in and snap a few photos whilst local glam-revivalists Roky Moon & Bolt played on the air. Afterwards we walked down to Valhalla, grabbed a few beers, and had a chat with the band. Many thanks to Ian Wells for having us over to the studio, and to the band for letting us share two of the songs from their set. The full interview can be listened to here, as well as the tracks Go Wake Up Avery and Monster Came Out Of The Woods from their KTRU set. more ›

When Houstonist sat down with The Gold Sounds last week, we were pleasantly surprised to be given a copy of their new album, Seismic Love, to review. In the interest of full disclosure, we'd made no attempt to hide the fact that we were fans of the band from the first time we saw them, and Houstonist is pretty darn excited to finally see an official release from these Deer Park fellows. more ›

Houstonist headed over to Menil Park at 3 pm yesterday, to ask Free Press Houston to be our valentine. They might not exactly have said yes, but they gave us an awesome gift as they unveiled the 2010 Summerfest lineup. more ›

Houstonist knows that the crux of a party is the music - get it wrong, and your event is toast, but get it right and it's the place to be. In this day and age, "anyone can be a DJ" right? Just load up a sweet playlist and go track to track. Wrong: the world of the DJ is perilous: tragedy awaits, coiled and poised to strike in the form of an improperly selected track, a gear malfunction, or an over-enthusiastic party-goer. Fortunately, a good DJ has been well-versed in party crisis management, able to quickly rectify any situation that may arise. We know a few folks in this town who are more than capable behind a set of tables, and one of those is honorable Dave Wrangler. Thus, you can understand our excitement when Dave sent us his newest collection of mashups and remixes, Under The Influence. more ›

We're back with even more bands that we've come across. The amount of music in this town is astounding - our current list of active bands/musicians is nearing the 350 mark and we know that it's far from comprehensive. In the interest of fairness to bands of which we were previously aware, we'll be adding one or two of them to this post each week. more ›

Houstonist got waylaid by car troubles this week [you would not believe how hard it is to find a pair of 15" 20-spoke alloy wheels for a '92 Volvo in this town], but we've been cribbing notes the whole time. Rock Talk might be a day late, but it is definitely not a bit short. Here's your weekly update on the Houston scene. more ›

We often speak of the immense amount of music that occurs in this town, and the depth of our local talent. Allow us to introduce our newest feature covering the local music scene, Ol' Houstonian's Samuel's Music Emporium. Come one, come all, and let us share with you some local music that we came across in the past week! Note: This new feature is an attempt to expose local music of which we either weren't aware or hadn't listened to yet, accompanied by a few remarks about said artist. It is by no means an attempt at a comprehensive listing of local acts. more ›

For the week of February 1st - 3rd, 2010 Well, the old concert calendar is a bit light for the next few days, and Houstonist is just thankful that our pickings will be a bit easier for a few nights. We were getting a tad overwhelmed after all the shows this week. Hah! As if that were ever true. more ›

We mean that in a very loving way, trust us. The simple fact is that most Houston bands do not tour frequently, if at all. There is an overabundance of good music in this town [several of our favorite acts are playing this weekend, even], and we will do our best to avidly promote the local talent. While the internet is fairly amazing and absurd, the world is not going to discover just how great our music scene is if the bands in town don't hit the pavement and play some other cities and get people talking. more ›
