W 18th St. home showcase

If you live in the Heights you may have noticed the twin townhouses that were born over a year ago but were never finished. They are located on W 18th St, and one of them has been recently completed. Its ugly and decaying sibling, however, is still next door waiting naked in embarrassment for someone to cover her up or put her out of her misery. Don't let the warped wood scare you off, though - it's nothing some stucco (or EIFS) perhaps, won't fix! Everything looks pretty normal on Google maps, but take a (current) closer look!

The Second Annual No Holds Barred Chili Cookoff took place this past weekend at Shady Tavern in the Heights. Between the all-you-can-eat chili, cold beers, great weather and the Red River Shootout on TV, it was the place to be.

The NHB Chili Cookoff kicks off on Saturday, October 11th, at 2:00 p.m. at Shady Tavern in the Heights. Compeitors will need to be there earlier, around 10:00 a.m., to start the cooking (but you really ought to know that already if you're competing...). We first told you about the cookoff back in August, which means you should have had plenty of time to round up your team and come up with a killer recipe. But if you aren't a chili competitor and are more of a chili connoiseur, then the NHB Chili Cookoff is still right up your alley.

We took a trip over to the Heights today at lunch to see how the historic neighborhood was faring five days after Hurricane Ike. The Heights, like many other older neighbohoods in Houston, was badly battered by the high winds and tornados that Ike produced. The incredible wealth of beautiful old live oak and pecan trees in the neighborhood only gave Ike additional fodder during its destructive rampage.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!

Hey, locavores! Find yourself wanting a more comprehensive listing of all the farmers markets in town? Wondering where else to hit after your weekly jaunt to the Midtown Farmers Market or Urban Harvest? Wishing that there were markets on days other than Saturday mornings? Houstonist has got your back, babies!

What is art? Is it a French impressionist oil painting or is it a good book? A couple of local art students suggest that the answer might be more metaphysical than, say a (highly) interperative dance or a chocolate Jesus sculpture.

The sun rose on a beautiful, windy day on Sunday. In the whispers of the wind, you could almost hear the encouragement, and smell the impending victory. Your valiant Houstonist staff would soon convene to take on the Houston Arts & Media Houston History Road Rally (HAMHHRR) for the sake of honor, historical preservation, and cheap beer.

>> Poll shows split over Clemens, McNamee: The court of public opinion currently stands divided in Harris County regarding the Roger Clemens steroid scandal according to a poll by The Chronicle. According to the results published yesterday by David Barron, 35.5 percent said believed McNamee; 32.8 percent sided with The Rocket; and, 31.7 percent did not respond. The margin of error is listed at 4.1 percent. These numbers may prove initially encouraging for Clemens with a Justice Department investigation looming in his future. However, the data seems to indicate that his support base is less educated than McNamee's. Does it really seem hard to believe that someone kept a beer can, dirty gauze and a used syringe for seven years?

It's an American tradition, just like representative democracy and childhood obesity: the Super Bowl. Even people who aren't football fans usually find a way to watch the game (or the commercials, depending on your priorities) and the die-hards view Sunday as some combination of Christmas, graduation, and the non-lame parts of the Olympics all rolled into one. If you don't have plans for the big game already, here are a few options around town:

From local Houston headlines, we bring you these weekend news bits...

It’s hard enough to come up with enough words to entertain the masses of readers who flock to Houstonist as it is, but what do you do when the concert is a secret?

So successful in it's White Linen Nights venture, the heights is bringing back the merriment and cheer of getting together with neighbors and retailers, to create a sorta national night out. Well, sorta. During the day. Stop by lots and lots of Heights area retailers for a shopping extravaganza. "The event showcases the Heights faithfully - profiling the people, the shop owners, the artists and the businesses that make the Heights a classy, progressive,...

There are so many freaking cool things happening this weekend -- here's just a list of what Houstonist has on hand. Please send us the rest. Thursday November 29th HOUSTON. IT'S WORTH IT. Book Launch Party At the Lawndale Parking Lot, 4912 Main Street 6:30PM-9PM Images from the book will be projected on North wall of Lawndale art center. DJ Pooks spins the tunes and there will be refreshments. Proceeds from sales of the...

Finding new homes for old homes While these were listed as demolitions, it may only be partial - both 2506 Morse in Montrose (picture) and 347 W 27th in the Heights had steel beams outside waiting to lift and carry them away. While house moving isn't unheard of in Houston, we are (pleasantly) surprised, and also curious about where these smaller homes will end up since we all know the current trend is "build big"...

A rumble in the medical center If you live in the Southgate area, you were either violently awoken by the sound of exploding dynamite around 7:10 this morning, or you were standing on Travis St. witnessing the destruction of the Crowne Plaza Hotel by Cherry Demoliton (just like its near neighbor in June 2006). The building was recently appraised at a high value and was only about 34 years old, which is one of the...

Houstonist has an active and amazing Flickr photo group. We receive many, many photos of Houston and the surrounding areas every day and unless you are an active visitor to our photo pool many of these photos go unnoticed. So in a weekly effort to bring you more amazing photos from Houstonist readers and photographers, we are going to feature a block of photos submitted to our Flickr photo group. The images will be dug...

With Halloween and office holiday party outfit shopping getting closer (although hopefully not one and the same, unless you work for one of "those" kinds of companies) you and your wallet need some quality thrift store shopping time. Apparently our wish is someone's command - Houston's second Buffalo Exchange shop (249 W. 19th St.) is finally open in the Heights! Sure they're tres pricey for a used clothing shop and a teensy bit snooty...

We freely admit that we would love to live in Woodland Heights. Sure, a mansion in Broadacres would be nice, and it would be cool to own a fantastic mid-century house in Memorial — but every time we go to Woodland Heights, we can't help but think about what a cool neighborhood it is. That said, it shouldn't be a surprise that we're featuring a beautiful 1910 Woodland Heights home this week. The house...

::Danielle Reich Trio at King Biscuit:: We saw this and we couldn't remember the last time we stopped by Height's area neighborhood pub & grub, King Biscuit. So we decided to swing back by tonight to see jazz artist, Danielle Reich. It's been too long. They probably miss us. Right? Riiiiiight. A regular at The Black Swan in the Omni Hotel, Danielle plays weekly with a trio at King Biscuit in The Heights. A veteran...

In the city of gas, no-zoning and laissze-faire developers, local eco-sensitive construction will get the Houstonist’s attention. So, when we recently spotted this article in Dwell Magazine, we just had to share the good news with as many Houstonians as possible. Matt and Tina Ford seem to have figured out a way to make eco-friendly design both attractive and affordable. Having built in the Houston area for a few years under their company Esplanade...

As much as we hate to say it, if you want to catch 600 sq mi: Photos from Houston, you'd better do it fast: The show closes on Sunday. If you've already seen the show and want to enjoy it one last time, plan to swing by M2 Gallery in the Heights before Sunday afternoon; if you haven't seen the show yet, make it a point to go — it's absolutely incredible. (And if you...

Here's a chance to own a piece of history on Heights Boulevard: a 1918 home designed by noted architect Alfred C. Finn. The home had fallen into disrepair over the years — we mean, it looked bad — but in 2002, it was restored using the original plans, and it's now absolutely beautiful. A lot of the original features are still in place inside the house, including wood trim, baseboards, windows, gas fireplaces, sets...

So, did you miss the opening of 600 sq mi: Photos from Houston a couple of weekends ago? Needless to say, you missed a heck of a party — if you don't believe us, you can check out some of the photos from the event here. At any rate, we have some good news: You can come check out the photo show and meet some of the incredible artists whose work is included during the...

Spent all your cash on girlie drinks and shattered dreams again this weekend, didn't you? No worries - Thriftster gives you the lowdown on cheap stuff to do until Paycheck Friday. Monday: While the name of the show might be hitting a little close to home after this weekend's ACL sunburn, the Eastman Gallery's Skin exhibition is a neat way to check out local artists and the way they view the human form. Hit the...

Here's your first look at a small sampling of pics from our rather successful photo show opening last night at M² Gallery in The Heights. Check back soon for more info and photos. --- Photos from flickr users baldheretic, mrp1001, aggiechristine, bilbao58 and groovehouse...

Another reminder about 600 sq mi, Houstonist's photo show? Well, now that you mention it, yes: The show's on display now at M2 Gallery in the Heights, and the opening reception is 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the gallery. Which brings us to our point: If you picked up this week's Houston Press, you might have noticed the listing for the show in the Night & Day section. It's amazing — including a big...
