What's for dinner tonight? Don't know yet? Or still have groceries to pick up? Instead of swinging by Disco Kroger (pun intended) why not head south to Rice University for the Tuesday night version of the Houston Farmer's Market. (That link even includes lists of the seasonal vegetables and fruits that will be available this week.)

Take it from Houstonist: Recession dining sucks. Not that there's anything wrong with ordering off the dollar menu and rediscovering the joys of ramen once in a while, but seriously, aren't there days when you really want an amazing dinner at one of Houston's best restaurants? Yeah, that's what we thought.
So now that we've officially sobered up recuperated enough to write coherently — or as coherently as we ever do — we want to take a second to thank everyone who showed up at The Coffee Groundz on Saturday for the 2nd Annual Houstonist Crawfish Boil. We think almost all our 11 readers made it, and they brought 139 of their closest friends. Now a party.
We've never been fans of the work week, but never has our Monday through Friday grind seemed so endless. Time has been creeping along since Monday when we tersely answered your questions about tomorrow's 2nd Annual Houstonist Crawfish boil. Now that it's nearly here we thought it prudent to fill-in a few more of the relative blanks.
Thousands of crawfish will sacrifice themselves for your dining pleasure this Saturday at the 2nd Annual Houstonist Crawfish boil. Response for this year's event has been outstanding thus far. And, we can't wait to see you on Saturday.
Strike up the band because it is time once again for Houstonist to boil crawfish for the greater good of our readers.
Here at Houstonist we are always on the lookout for some good grub, and while this may be a taco truck town, there certainly is no shortage of places to find a good old-fashioned burger. We came across Sparkle’s Hamburger Spot one day as we drove around compiling a photography project.
The nondescript blue clapboard trailer at the corner of Leland and Dowling caught our attention immediately. A single bulb out front illuminated two tables and three benches, along with one lone (and very large) customer waiting for his food. It was at that moment that we knew we needed to sample the fare.
Big fans of Fearless Critic we are. And, we're big fans of free. Now the two have come together like PB&J, and we're preparing to enjoy it - milk optional.
Turtle soup lovers can breathe a sigh of relief: Brennan's of Houston is officially rebuilding and will be open to Creole junkies in October 2009. After being mostly destroyed in a devastating fire during Hurricane Ike, no special occasion dinner has been the same for thousands of Houstonian foodies.
Tomorrow is the biggest day in professional football: two sets of grown men in protective padding, brain buckets and tight pants will go head-to-head to see which is the best team in the nation. Whether you feel this to be the most spectacular sporting event, a good excuse to party like a rock star or you care less about it, but, you dig the commercials, most of the nation will be glued -- beverage in one hand, nacho in the other -- to the television.
Everyone likes burgers. Even vegetarians like burgers; that's why they make round patties of veggie-whatever called Boca Burgers. And while we Texans are usually known for our predelection for great big things, we've learned from Craig Biggio and Walter's on Washington that good things can come in small packages. Which brings us to Little Big's.
As Chinese New Year celebrations bring us the Year of the Ox, you may find yourself wanting to have a celebration of your own, at home. Houstonist has a recipe from Chef Martin Yan, of PBS's "Yan Can Cook" that fits the bill! After all, Tsingtao or Tsingtao Pure Lager should be your beer of choice when hosting your own celebration, why not use them to cook, as well? When celebrating Chinese New Year, traditional Chinese customs should be incorporated, including:
As promised, Houstonist mingled with about 275 intrepid people who came out to experience their first Flavor Tripping party on Friday night at The Social. And although the lines were sometimes long to get in and to get at the food, people had a wonderful time tripping the night away.
Got your tickets for the Flavor Tripping party tomorrow night? Good! Then you know that the event has been moved from the Saint Arnold brewery to The Social on Washington Avenue, due to scheduling conflicts. But don't despair -- there will still be plenty of sweet, sweet beer to go around. Instead of the flotilla of Saint Arnold brews, there will be three beers on tap for the night: Guinness (which tastes like a chocolate milkshake while under the influence of the berry), Brooklyn Lager and Saint Arnold's Elissa IPA.
Congratulations on not completely falling down on the job by exercising your right as an American citizen and voting today. But the fun's not over! You still have an entire night of talking heads, exhausting rhetoric and ceaseless exposition to look forward to as our nation chews the cud of the 2008 election until early morn. So instead of parking it on the couch and watching the overly-hairsprayed pundits on CNN and Fox News, why don't you head out and celebrate Election Night in style? We've got plenty of options for you, so get out there and keep on rocking that vote tonight.
Perhaps the most concise description of a Renaissance Festival (any Renaissance Festival, really) was delivered by Neil Steinberg of the Chicago Sun-Times:
What are you doing on the first Saturday of the month? What's that? Nothing you say? Well, head over to The Heights and experience the First Saturday Arts Market on October 4th from 11a.m. to 6p.m.
If you're still mistakenly laboring under the impression that ballet is dry, dusty and boring, the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater would like the chance to persuade you otherwise.
News broke this morning that all 300 restaurants in the Texas-based Bennigan's chain had mysteriously and suddenly closed overnight, all across the nation. Confused staff reported showing up to work and being met by shuttered doors, while some managers spent their morning calling employees to inform them of the situation. Thousands of waitstaff, line cooks, bartenders and bussers across the country are simply stranded, waiting for any news from Bennigan's on whether or not they'll have a job tomorrow.
The fastest way to a culture's "heart" is through your belly and proper dining etiquette (lest you offend, which may explain some "bad" service), and via bus. Yes, that sounds wrong, as anyone who has ever utilized a bus to travel a long way can tell you, you can and will stop in every wide spot in the road that appears inhabited. Perhaps that is why it's an inexpensive manner in which to travel. We digress, this is a very localized bus trip and there will be food at every stop - WHOOT. This weekend there is a fabulous looking, very affordable way you can learn more about not only the cuisines of Pakistan, Thailand, China and the Phillipines, but, culture-specific dining etiquette (so you are not the ugly American when you dine out - the better to impress your date, afterall) and cooking methodologies. Join the Asia/Pacific American Heritage Association this Saturday, July 12th from 9:30 a.m. until approximately 3:00 p.m. and take a gastronomic tour that spans four restaurants and costs a mere $35 for non-members, or $25 for members. For information or assistance with tickets, please phone 713.784.1112.
The first of the summer corn has arrived, along with a bounty of other summertime goodies!
The infamous Texas Crawfish and Music Festival is scheduled to take place in Spring this Saturday. What goes better with crawfish than an ice cold beer? Now the tricky question is exactly what beer goes best with crawfish on a hot and muggy Saturday afternoon? After much research at Sam's Boat every Monday night for several months, Houstonist has found the answer.
Great news!! If you have not checked the list of participating eateries in the Dining Out For Life list, Niko Niko's is participating!!! Houstonist had lunch w/ a couple of peeps this week. As always, it was delish - we chose rice for our starch to accompany the gyro plate, it's creamy and flavorful - we'd love the recipe, just saying. We've had the potatoes and the fries previously, both are very good choices, as well. The portions are huge, and we love the gyro plate, in particular because you get a choice of side, a little pita, lots of luscious gyro meat, topped with red onion and tomato and yummy sauce and a bonus dolmade on the top. We can't seem to consume more than half of our plate in one sitting - no matter how hard we try.
The last time Houstonist offered up a drink recipe, we were hailing the coming of a new and warmer season. If you're like many longtime Houstonians, you've been enjoying this recent mild weather and spending as much time in the great outdoors as possible before the dreaded heat and humidity that is Summer comes rearing its ugly head around the corner. Alas, all good things must come to an end, but not like you may think. Perhaps in yet another piece of evidence that global warming is more than a conspiracy theory evoked by Al Gore, a cold front will be sweeping through our town this evening, dropping temperatures by 30 degrees. That's right folks. We're being forced to bundle up in mid-April before painting the town red this weekend. And what better beverage to consume in chilly temperatures than a traditional Irish Coffee?
Houstonians, mark your calendars now to participate in Dining Out For Life on Thursday, April 24th. What a fabulous way to raise funds for a cause, you lift your fork, feed your face and pay for dinner like you always do - whammo, you just donated! All you have to do to make a donation is go out for breakfast, lunch, dinner or "D: All of the above" on the designated day at a participating restaurant and 33% of your food bill goes to AIDS Foundation Houston or AFH! Plus, you can make the deal even "sweeter" by having a dessert! What better logic can you have for ordering Patsy's Chocolate Monkey Cake as a chaser for your Debris Po-Boy (for you who do not know, a Debris Po-Boy can bitch slap a French Dip into next week, every time - cause it is much mo' bettah) at Danton's Gulf Coast Seafood Kitchen??? Last year, AFH helped over 5,000 Houstonians with monies raised who are either HIV-positive or have AIDS, the more we can raise, the more people we can help. AFH provides clients with housing, food assistance and case management.
Molina’s Cantina, a family-owned and operated Tex-Mex Restaurant chain headquartered in Houston, announced yesterday that they will not renew their lease at 5227 Buffalo Speedway, located at the northeast corner of Buffalo Speedway and Bissonnet. The last day of business will be Saturday May 24, 2008. The Molina family is proactively seeking a new location within the same geographic region and intends to be back in business in the West University area soon. Meanwhile the current site will be cleared for new construction and redeveloped by H-E-B Grocery Co.
Young Texans Against Cancer 4th Annual Spring BBQ & Silent Auction
Last week marked the start of the Spring season. It's time to put away the winter coats, boots, gloves, and scarves. Wait, we're in Houston, right? So, it's actually time to put away the long sleeved shirts, jeans, and to shave away that stubble from your face (or legs as the case may be) that kept you warm on those lonely brisk 60 degree evenings. Break out the cargo shorts, polo shirts, sun dresses, and sandals. Spring is here, baby!
