Our fair city of Houston is not exactly known for its environmental conscientiousness. According to a recent survey by Nalgene, maker of the popular water bottles, we rank 22 out of 25 on America’s Least Wasteful Cities survey. Yikes! The study ranked the 25 largest cities in the United States on “23 waste-focused habits of urban Americans” including recycling, use of energy efficient light bulbs, and use of public transportation. Houston’s overall score based on the effective points from all 23 categories was an 879.16, a far cry from the least wasteful city of San Francisco with a 1025.45. However, we did manage to edge out a few more wasteful cities; rounding out the bottom of the list is Indianapolis, Dallas, and Atlanta.

Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle appologized on Thursday to a family that had been detained for running a red light while speeding to the hospital to be with a relative before she died. Houston Texan running back Ryan Moats, his wife Tamishia and her relatives were racing against time to visit Moat's mother-in-law who lay dying from cancer in the hospital.

Moats' mother-in-law, 45-year-old Jonetta Collinsworth, had been struggling with breast cancer. That night family members received word that they needed to hurry to the hospital because she was dying.

Since joining TNT as an NBA studio analyst, former Houston Rockets star Charles Barkley has been quite the Negative Nancy when discussing the playoff chances of his old team. Year after year Barkley sits on his throne beside Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith and waxes poetically about his displeasure over the play of Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady, and the rest of the Clutch City cast. Most particularly, Barkley constantly expresses his displeasure at the play of McGrady, who entered the league with Jordanesque appeal, but has yet to carry a team passed the first round of the playoffs.

En route to a 117-99 road victory over the Indiana Pacers, the Houston Rockets set a franchise record with their 16th straight win last night. Courtesy of a stellar first half from Tracy McGrady (23 points by intermission), the Rockets went on a 15-0 run in the second quarter and overcame a third quarter surge by the Pacers to cruise to victory.

Yesterday was the second of the Super Tuesdays for this Presidential Election year and included primary elections in Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont. Houstonist could careless about who wins. We're just excited to see the record turnout at the polls. We all win when that happens. Congratulations, Houston, and all you Texans that don't live in our kickass town.

Tonight, Houston will host the U.S. debut of the first Western-style interpretation of the classic Chinese opera, Farewell My Concubine. With performances only today and tomorrow at the Wortham, this is a rare opportunity. The original Chinese opera will be performed by a Chinese cast and sung in Mandarin. Chinese opera has come to the United States so very infrequently that if you have any interest in Chinese music, art, opera or culture, you should get over to the Wortham.

Three day weekends are a beast. You end the previous week by slacking in some fashion on Friday, since you're planning all the shennanigans you'll be committing over the weekend. Then you pick things up after the weekend with the realization that you've got to fit five days of work into four. Plus, it's cold and depressing (like a Packers fan on Monday) and that pretty much explains why a Monday feature is appearing on Wednesday.
