Texas schools came out of Saturday's college basketball action with a collective 3-2 record, spread across two different conferences. (Big XII and Conference USA) The premier showdown of the weekend pitted the 12th ranked Texas Longhorns against Bobby Knight's Red Raiders of Texas Tech. With an outstanding defensive effort put up by head coach Rick Barnes' boys, the Longhorns were able to run away with a 73-47 victory in Austin. Texas won its 12th straight......

We realize that we're almost a week late on this, but as the only media outlet in the city unafraid to actually directly quote the incident in question, we felt it was our duty to follow up on the story of the Rice MOB's halftime show against Tulsa this past Saturday. For both of you who follow Rice athletics (Houstonist fun fact! Rice has sports teams besides baseball!), you know that after making a bowl......

Apparently competing to find the most thankless college football head coaching position in the state of Texas, University of Houston head coach Art Briles today accepted the Baylor job that was made vacant by the firing of Guy Morriss last week. Briles' contract with Baylor will extend through seven losing seasons at $1.8 million dollars per losing season. Cougar athletic director and all around quote machine Dave Maggard has said that Briles will leave immediately,......

The University of Houston Cougars Softball team won its first Conference USA title Saturday afternoon, surviving a heated pitching duel. Tournament MVP Angel Shamblin tossed a 2-hit shutout give the Cougars the Conference title in a narrow 1-0 victory over East Carolina. The Cougars scored what would turn out to be the only run of the game in the 1st inning, capitalizing on a pair of fielding errors. We notice that for some reason......

Roger freakin' Clemens, y'all. Don't even get us started. But even if you want to call him a traitor, you gotta admit the man can pitch, and so can the guys up for the award named after him, the Clemens Award, which is presented annually to the top pitcher in college baseball. Three Rice students are on the official watch-list for the award this year. ESPN Top-100 prospect Joe Savery (with a record of 6-1......

Good morning, Houston. The Internet has become such a part of our lives that it's hard sometimes to step back and see just how pervasive it really is — but the folks at Domain Name Wire came up with an interesting way to do that: They counted the number of URLs advertised along Highway 71 and I-10 between Austin and Houston. The grand total? More than 68, including the whopper qualityconcreteandswimmingpools.com (which doesn't seem......

Houstonist loves it when UH and Rice go head-to-head, because it means we win either way, right? Last night the Cougars faced the Owls in basketball for the second time this season. Rice already won at home against UH this season. Termed an "epic collapse" by those sensationalistic Chronicle sportswriters, in their last meeting, UH blew a 24-point lead in the second half. This time, however, the Coogs had the home court advantage, and, well,......

Houstonist is bleeding Cougar red these days — yeah, we know, it's actually the color we always bleed, but given UH's winning the Conference USA football championship Friday, it seems appropriate. At any rate, we were excited to hear that the city's throwing a celebration for the Coogs downtown today. The rally — with head coach Art Briles, the team, the UH marching band and Mayor Bill White — will start at noon at Hermann......

If you're not too excited already about the Dynamo and the Texans, check it out: two Houston football teams combined forces this weekend to make UH the champions in the West Division of Conference USA. The Cougars did their part by rallying in the second half to defeat SMU in Dallas. But Rice pulled out an improbable win over second-place Tulsa in double-overtime to insure the division title for the Coogs. UH will travel to......

The Houston Bowl held in January has been mired in financial problems and was gasping for air until Lone Star Entertainment, a company owned by the Houston Texans, decided to step in and try to rescue the game. Lone Star and Harris County Houston Sports Authority president Billy Burge took their plans to Southern California yesterday to try to persuade the NCAA to keep the Houston Bowl alive. While Houston has hosted smaller bowls like......

A few weeks after we had news thtat the Houston Bowl was sorta directionless, the Chronicle's Big 12 blog is reporting that nothing's really changed, and the game might take a year off or become one of the Big 12's bowls. Nothing has been revealed, but what we're hearing involves the Big 12 taking over the 6-year-old bowl game. The game would be No. 8 in the pecking order and would have to reduce its......

Houstonist is a cheerleader for our local teams and what could be better than a local college team in the top 20? Well, how about two local college teams ranked in the top 20? Rice (1) and the University of Houston (14) are both ranked in the top 20 in ESPN's current Baseball America poll and they hook up for three important Conference USA games tonight, Saturday and Sunday at Rice's Reckling Park. Rice, a......
