Well, it's not what University of Houston basketball fans wanted, but it's the best they're going to get so they'll take it.

In the wake of a disappointing 0-fer season in Conference USA and the firing of head coach Willis Wilson, Rice's basketball program is in dire need of a turnaround. They may have found the captain to right their ship in recently available Cal-Berkley coach Ben Braun.
...except for tomorrow, of course, when UT comes to town to attempt to avenge their defeat in the College Classic at Minute Maid last week. Last year's closer, Cole St. Clair, is rumored as the starter, and tickets are going fast: we even found people trying to sell them on Craigslist!
As the Astros start their Spring Training schedule today in Osceola County, the college baseball season has been underway for a couple of weeks now. The annual Houston College Classic returns to Minute Maid Park this weekend as one of the premier regional showcases of top-level NCAA baseball.
We realize that we're almost a week late on this, but as the only media outlet in the city unafraid to actually directly quote the incident in question, we felt it was our duty to follow up on the story of the Rice MOB's halftime show against Tulsa this past Saturday. For both of you who follow Rice athletics (Houstonist fun fact! Rice has sports teams besides baseball!), you know that after making a bowl...
Apparently competing to find the most thankless college football head coaching position in the state of Texas, University of Houston head coach Art Briles today accepted the Baylor job that was made vacant by the firing of Guy Morriss last week. Briles' contract with Baylor will extend through seven losing seasons at $1.8 million dollars per losing season. Cougar athletic director and all around quote machine Dave Maggard has said that Briles will leave immediately,...

Sherman replaces Dennis Franchione who resigned after a 38-30 A & M upset win over rival Texas Longhorns. This is Mike Sherman's first college head coaching job, but he...
Houston vs. Dallas. Does anything else need to be said? Robertson Stadium, which is located on the campus of the University of Houston, will be hosting two different versions of this great Texas rivalry. Tonight, the 2006 MLS Champion Houston Dynamo will take on FC Dallas in the second game of this home-and-home Western Conference semi-final playoff game. In the first game, which FC Dallas hosted, the Hoops took game 1 of this aggregate-scoring...
Happy Monday from the Sports Doldrums! With the World Series over, the Texans being the Texans, and the Rockets not quite started, this has got to be the worst time of the sports year. But sports being what they are, people are still talking about them. Here's what the blog world has been saying about your hometown teams: - Sad, but unsurprising, end to the story of the life and death of Eddie Griffin....

A couple of University of Houston stories for your Friday, so listen up Coogs. First, back on August 13th, Cougar offensive lineman Jarrod Butler collapsed while lifting weights in an on-campus weight room. It was later determined that he had suffered a heart attack as a result of an electrical abnormality in his heart. After spending the past two weeks under observation and treatment at The Methodist Hospital, Butler is being released today to return...
Rice swept Texas A&M in two games over the weekend to win themselves a trip to Omaha's College World Series: their sixth trip in history and fourth in the last six years. (Last year, the Owls were eliminated at the very end by Oregon State). In the first game of the Super-Regional, a sellout crowd watched freshman All-American Ryan Berry pitch into the eight inning, striking out ten, and went home happy as the Owls...
The eyes of Texas will be upon Houston this weekend as the No. 1 ranked Rice Owls (52-12) set to battle No. 6 Texas A & M (48-17) at Reckling Park for a birth in the College World Series. These two Texas baseball teams have been doing battle since 1914 with A & M leading the all-time series at 173-86-2 and also a 2-0 record to sport this year against Rice. But don't let...
Roger freakin' Clemens, y'all. Don't even get us started. But even if you want to call him a traitor, you gotta admit the man can pitch, and so can the guys up for the award named after him, the Clemens Award, which is presented annually to the top pitcher in college baseball. Three Rice students are on the official watch-list for the award this year. ESPN Top-100 prospect Joe Savery (with a record of 6-1...
University of Houston quarterback Kevin Kolb was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round, 36th overall, in the NFL draft on Saturday. Kolb, one the nation's best quarterbacks last year, was in Poth, Texas at a family ranch and was stunned to receive the early call. "It was a shock. Obviously, as an athlete you feel you are as capable as anyone else on the board, but in the draft it has...
The 10th annual Silver Glove series is set and ready to go. This year's three game series starts tonight at 7 p.m. at UH's Cougar Field as Houston (18-14, 5-1 C-USA) sends Aaron Brown (4-2, 4.62 ERA) to face the fifth-ranked Rice Owls (27-10, 8-1 C-USA) and Ryan Berry (5-1, 2.58 ERA). Both teams will be looking to capitalize on each teams errors as they shoot for C-USA positioning. Rice and UH both currently...
University of Houston basketball legend Guy V. Lewis was voted into the newly created National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Lewis, who will be inducted in November in Kansas City, Missouri, will be part of the second ever induction class that also includes ten other inductees and featuring UCLA all-time great Kareem Abul-Jabbar. . When it came to college basketball, Lewis' ideas were always Texas big. He was the first person to put a...
Houstonist loves it when UH and Rice go head-to-head, because it means we win either way, right? Last night the Cougars faced the Owls in basketball for the second time this season. Rice already won at home against UH this season. Termed an "epic collapse" by those sensationalistic Chronicle sportswriters, in their last meeting, UH blew a 24-point lead in the second half. This time, however, the Coogs had the home court advantage, and, well, they took advantage of it.
things going on at the university. Case in point: The NCAA is investigating TSU's tennis program based on accusations of "scholarship irregularities," and both the men's and women's teams have been suspended for the spring semester.
Owls fans were excited after brand new coach Todd Graham took the team to their first bowl game since 1961 just a year after they finished a miserable 1 and 10 in the win column. Now, faced with news that Graham, who was defensive coordinator at Tulsa for three years, will return there to take the head coach job next season, Rice fans are stunned and angry. A Rice facebook group called GRAHAM HAS...
Tickets for two popular Houston baseball events, the Houston College Classic and Astros FanFest, go on sale today. The College Classic is a six-team tournament, held Feb. 9-11 at Minute Maid, and will include hometown teams UH and Rice, as well as Baylor, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, and A&M. All but A&M are ranked among the top 40 college baseball teams, so the tournament should prove to be very interesting. A full schedule of the games...
Houstonist is bleeding Cougar red these days — yeah, we know, it's actually the color we always bleed, but given UH's winning the Conference USA football championship Friday, it seems appropriate. At any rate, we were excited to hear that the city's throwing a celebration for the Coogs downtown today. The rally — with head coach Art Briles, the team, the UH marching band and Mayor Bill White — will start at noon at Hermann...
If you're not too excited already about the Dynamo and the Texans, check it out: two Houston football teams combined forces this weekend to make UH the champions in the West Division of Conference USA. The Cougars did their part by rallying in the second half to defeat SMU in Dallas. But Rice pulled out an improbable win over second-place Tulsa in double-overtime to insure the division title for the Coogs. UH will travel to...
The Rice Owls suffered a devastating loss Monday, after freshman Dale Lloyd (a Lamar High School alum) collapsed during a light workout. Though he was conscious when taken to the hospital, Lloyd declined quickly and died around 9 AM Monday. Autopsy results are pending for the 19 year old defensive lineman, who voulenteered in high school with the Mayor's Youth Council and was elected to the National Who's Who of American High School Students. While...
The Houston Bowl held in January has been mired in financial problems and was gasping for air until Lone Star Entertainment, a company owned by the Houston Texans, decided to step in and try to rescue the game. Lone Star and Harris County Houston Sports Authority president Billy Burge took their plans to Southern California yesterday to try to persuade the NCAA to keep the Houston Bowl alive. While Houston has hosted smaller bowls like...
In case you've forgotten or planned to watch America's Got Talent (David Hasselhoff is alive?!), remember that the Rice Owls will be playing tonight in the CWS semifinals against Oregon State. If you're not a college baseball fan, or baseball fan for that matter, consider that Oregon State's mascot is a Beaver. We're not sure what our point is, but hopefully this helpful reminder will be enough to get you to tune in. For more...
A few weeks after we had news thtat the Houston Bowl was sorta directionless, the Chronicle's Big 12 blog is reporting that nothing's really changed, and the game might take a year off or become one of the Big 12's bowls. Nothing has been revealed, but what we're hearing involves the Big 12 taking over the 6-year-old bowl game. The game would be No. 8 in the pecking order and would have to reduce its...
College Football Saturdays will be a little more like Pro Football Sundays this coming season. The NCAA approved a proposal Tuesday from the Football Rules Committee allowing coaches to challenge on-field rulings. The new rule will work just like the NFL version, in that if the coach's challenge is successful, that team will not be charged a timeout.
Houstonist is a cheerleader for our local teams and what could be better than a local college team in the top 20? Well, how about two local college teams ranked in the top 20?
So maybe Houston just wasn't meant to host a college bowl game. First we had the Bluebonnet Bowl, which lasted from 1959 to 1987 and eventually withered because of dropping ticket sales and the lack of a corporate sponsor. Fast-forward about 20 years, and Houston's latest foray into the college postseason — the Houston Bowl — may be about to meet the same fate.
