Hola, Houston. It's rodeo time. Everyone get happy. Throw ya hands in the air if you love Hannah Montana! Musical acts like Montana, rather the lack of Tejano acts on the rodeo bill, are just what have folks around Houston up in arms. Former State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos is calling for "friends across the whole great state of Texas not to attend the Houston livestock show, period." According to the ABC13.com story, the issue is a lack of main stage Tejano acts on Go Tejano Day, which "celebrates Houston’s rich Hispanic heritage...features premier entertainment, plus a mariachi competition, and other activities..." Rodeo officials blame the lack of main stage performances on feedback from last years ticket holders citing that 3% of the poll group said it was due to the Tejano star booked for the event. Perhaps interest would increase if bigger name act was booked. Sounds like there should be a Tejano Idol show in the works.
Good morning, Houston. Suppose you're trying to keep up with piles and piles of government reports. How can you tell when there are too many? Simple: You ask for a report, of course. That's what the Texas State Library and Archives Commission did — and in a 668-page report, the commission has declared that the state is over-reported. The commission looked at more than 170 state agencies and universities and found more than 1,600...

Good morning, Houston. We forgot to mention a bit of news last week: According to ForbesTraveler.com, Houston is the sixth-best restaurant city in the country. "San Antonio may have a far more manifest Mexican food culture, but Houston, which spirals forever outward, has far more breadth and depth," the site said; it specifically cited upper-end Tony's, Café Annie and Américas, but also mentioned the Breakfast Klub, with its "irresistible" chicken and waffles. Mmm. >>...
On what would have been Martin Luther King Jr.'s 78th birthday, some Houstonians are saying the city hasn't done enough to commemorate the life of the civil rights leader through the years. Sure, there's the street in southeast Houston that bears his name and there's the bust of MLK at Bricker Park, but maybe that's not enough for a city like Houston. By this time next year, the Chronicle reports, at least two groups hope...
Looks like it may be the end of the line for the Bible in the previously forgotten William Mosher memorial in front of the old Harris County Courthouse: A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that the Bible must be removed from the monument because a district judge made it a religious monument when he restored it 10 years ago. We talked about the Mosher monument in December; if you haven't seen it, it's a block...
A man born with no arms has sued the University of Houston, claiming a professor refused to give him lecture notes and would not allow him to have someone take notes in her class, the Chronicle reports this afternoon. The suit, filed by 42-year-old Gary Bradford, was one of 16 filed statewide this week accusing the government and private businesses of failures to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Bradford enrolled at UH last...
About a month ago, HPD arrested about 30 men for lewd activity during a sting in Memorial Park — and now some activists are wondering if the sting was homophobic. The arrests targeted activity around park restrooms, but several of the men arrested say the doors were locked and they were forced to go into the bushes to relieve themselves. That's when they say police arrested them for indecent exposure. Local civil rights activist Ray...

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has suspended its crackdown on drunks in bars while it investigates complaints from legislators and the public about how the program is run. The TABC stepped up arrests of intoxicated people in bars in September after the Legislature approved funding for 120 new TABC staff members, including 59 new agents, to help the agency decrease drunk driving. The idea was to keep people from being drunk in bars, which in...
The civil rights movement was... oh... about 40 years ago, but that didn't stop employees at Commercial Coating Services, Inc., a Conroe-based company, from physically and verbally abusing Charles Hickman, a black man, because of his race. Hickman received a substantial settlement to the tune of $1 million after he sued for racial discrimination and harassment. In 2002, one of his employers even went as far as putting a noose on Hickman's neck and choking...
