The 37th annual Chevron Houston Marathon took place this past Sunday, on the kind of beautiful, crisp winter's day that makes the Houston summers totally worth it. The over 200,000 spectators and 15,000 runners who turned out for the race make it difficult to imagine that the first Houston Marathon in 1972 had a mere 113 competitors.

Area training groups are readying themselves now for the Chevron Houston Marathon, which will take place Jan 14, 2007. All the programs offer group runs on weekends as well as helpful training schedules for your individual runs. If you're lucky, you'll also get a T-shirt and even discounts at local running specialty shops.

If you’re driving around Houston Sunday morning and run into 18,000 people running, don’t worry: It’s not the apocalypse, it’s the 34th Annual Chevron Houston Marathon. Each year, Houston’s marathon attracts more international runners and is squeaking into the top 10 largest marathons in the country.
