Houston vs. Dallas. Does anything else need to be said? Robertson Stadium, which is located on the campus of the University of Houston, will be hosting two different versions of this great Texas rivalry. Tonight, the 2006 MLS Champion Houston Dynamo will take on FC Dallas in the second game of this home-and-home Western Conference semi-final playoff game. In the first game, which FC Dallas hosted, the Hoops took game 1 of this aggregate-scoring...

Even with Houston's crime spike at the end of last year, we still have a long way to go before we catch up with Dallas: According to the FBI, Houston is the seventh safest city in the United States — and guess who tops the list for crime per capita? That's right: the Big D. Crime statistics from the nation's 10 largest cities came from the FBI's Uniform Crime Statistics report for 2005, which compares...
Remeber earlier in the week, when Dallas said it couldn't handle the 40,000 Harris County evacuees the state might ask it to take in case of a hurricane? Well, now Dallas-area officials are starting to backpedal on that, apparently after realizing that it makes them look rather uppity and selfish. But Houstonist is confused — isn't that why we love Dallas?
Houston and many other Gulf Coast cities aren't exactly eager to be the next FEMA disaster, a la New Orleans and Katrina. With these thoughts in mind, Texas officials have formed a plan pairing coastal cities with more inland locations to house "special needs" evacuees — those without the means or ability to escape on their own. Naturally, Houston was paired with Dallas, which was asked to potentially house 40,000 special needs evacuees from...
Didn't Houstonist tell you that the state's crackdown on drunks in bars would change when it started affecting tourism? Ah, we were so right: The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has announced it will conduct an internal investigation of the program and will start retraining officers. TABC spokeswoman Carolyn Beck said officers will continue to arrest exceedingly drunk people, but the commission is taking complaints — of which there have been many — seriously.
The rivalry between Houston and Dallas isn't news — but media outlets in both cities occasionally try to make news out of it. The latest example: a story from KTVT in Dallas, which skims over the differences between the cities and comes to no real conclusion. Bragging rights become most important when it comes to bringing in tourists. “Probably Houston has seen it's zenith if you will. In Dallas we have not peaked yet...
Many are the times Houstonist has laid awake at night wishing we had the chance to name a professional sports team — no, really. Where would we turn to find the right name? Ferocious animals? Space-related words? Military titles? Important historical dates? Ah, it's nice to see all of the above represented in the naming contest for Houston's new soccer team, formerly the San Jose Earthquakes.
It's no secret that Houston and the New York media have had a love/hate relationship over the years — well, OK, mostly hate. So we were interested to see what the NY Times said in yesterday's 36 Hour travel feature on Houston — and it seems writer Dan Halpern actually got it: Houston doesn't have a clear-cut positive reputation, like Austin (the laid-back slacker capital), or even a good nickname, like Dallas (Big D)....
Next time you're thinking about a trip to Dallas, don't just pack your Neiman's card — pack some heat. City Crime Rankings ranks Dallas as the fifth most dangerous city in the U.S. with a population over 500,000. Houston ranks ninth. On the overall list, not considering population, Dallas comes in 22nd most dangerous; Houston doesn't make the top 25. Of course, Dallas can explain away any difference between it and Houston by waving...
