Anvil Bar & Refuge Now Open

Anvil Bar & Refuge is open for business pouring old-fashioned cocktails and refreshing libations. Houstonist has been anticipating the opening of Anvil since the Poison Girl Classic American Cocktail Gathering back in December, which featured the former Beaver’s team, now Anvil owners/bartenders, manning the bar and promoting some classic favorites.

Want to support the local arts scene in Houston, but wish there was more liquor involved in your patronage? Then head over to Beaver's Icehouse tonight for the kickoff of Cultured Cocktails from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sponsored by New Living and Spacetaker, this series of happy hours held each Thursday will benefit a different arts non-profit group each week.

Got your tickets for the Flavor Tripping party tomorrow night? Good! Then you know that the event has been moved from the Saint Arnold brewery to The Social on Washington Avenue, due to scheduling conflicts. But don't despair -- there will still be plenty of sweet, sweet beer to go around. Instead of the flotilla of Saint Arnold brews, there will be three beers on tap for the night: Guinness (which tastes like a chocolate milkshake while under the influence of the berry), Brooklyn Lager and Saint Arnold's Elissa IPA.

While driving through the Galleria area over the weekend, Houstonist stumbled across a new Tex-Mex restaurant dubbed “Maggie Rita’s.” Never one to turn down the opportunity to guzzle a new margarita or two or twenty, we decided to make a night of it at the newest bistro to grace the strip mall at the intersection of Sage and West Alabama and skip out on our traditional Saturday night dinner at Chuy’s.

Did we miss something? Let us know. Here’s the full week line-up. Local bands are noted by an asterisk (*):

We're not claiming to be winos, but Houstonist is just like any other Joe Schmo who likes a good glass of wine. . .or two. Maybe three. That being said, we were more than thrilled to stumble (not literally—that comes 280108_wine.jpgafterwards) across Sonoma Wine Bar and Boutique. Okay, so we didn't even bother checking out the "boutique" part, but do you blame us?

He can make you burn, make you rock, or teach you about triangles. Houstonist recently caught up with Trevi "Big Daddy" Biles, local hot sauce maker/ Whorehound band member/ geometry teacher. Here's what Big Daddy Trevi had to say about Big Daddy's Ass Burn "Hell Goin' In Hell Goin' Out" Hot Sauce:

Okay, okay - this is a no-bake, not from a "box", as creative as you want to be, addition to your holiday party, goody swap or gift. After all, it's not about buying up all the gift cards at the convenience store on the corner - it's the thought that really counts. Also, these are great additions to little treat bag/thank you gifts for your holiday guests. What is it? Chocolate Bark creations!!! Very easy, very elegant and very delicious.

Houstonist told you about Continental's new mobile boarding pass service in last week's Tech Buzz. This week we tested the service.

Perspectives 159: Superconscious, Automatisms Now December 14, 2007 – March 9, 2008 Opening reception December 13, 2007, 6:30-9:00 p.m. Sigh. This is Houston's last hurrah with Senior CAMH Curator Paola Morsiani, and we are sad. Having been with the CAMH for over eight years, Morsiani is heading north to become Curator of Contemporary Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, an internationally renowned encyclopedic museum in the midst of a $258 million renovation and expansion....

We had ourselves a little quandary this past weekend. It was close to midnight and our friends wanted to grab a drink. Houstonist was hungry because, well, Houstonist is always hungry. Now, there's very little that excites us when we think of bar food. Being vegetarian, we have learned to expect that our late-night bar food will taste like deep-fried freezer burn. (We suspect that the meat options don't taste much better.) So we fortified...

Here you go Houston, more food and wine events for you to peruse. We are going to work to get you more than one Culinary Events posting per week, as the holidays can increase the number of events, dinners, fund-raising food and beverage activities and festivals. Also, we strive to give you some advance notice - as you can't always get your reservations or tickets, which ever the case may be, on the day...

We realize that we're almost a week late on this, but as the only media outlet in the city unafraid to actually directly quote the incident in question, we felt it was our duty to follow up on the story of the Rice MOB's halftime show against Tulsa this past Saturday. For both of you who follow Rice athletics (Houstonist fun fact! Rice has sports teams besides baseball!), you know that after making a bowl...

Meyerland's Carousel House came crashing down today - the property's new owner Marvin Granit decided to hurry up and get it over with, just a day before Thanksgiving. The house has been an interesting architectural fixture in Houston since it was built by Robert Cohen in 1964, and has had a resurgence of attention since the previous owner John O'Quinn put it on the market. We featured the endangered home in late August, the Chronicle's...

We've already told about the concerts we're most excited about this week: Peter Bjorn and John at Warehouse Live and local artist Ethan Durelle at Fitzgerald's, both this Friday night. We also told you about Tori Amos' visit to Jones Hall this Sunday. If that's not enough for you, a lot of local acts are leaving their parent's dinner table early and playing some great shows all throughout the holiday weekend. Maybe you should...

Ok, ok. We listened to you. We DO do that sometimes. And you've said that even though you can't live without really enjoy the Daily-ist everyday, a feature that picks out one kick arse event each day from the thousands, um, ok, lots and lots of things going on in the city, you are busy people. And you would like to plan ahead. Ok, we hear ya. So it's back: The Weekly-ist List. We'll...

Indie/hip-hop fans will enjoy tonight's line up at Warehouse Live, headlined by Aesop Rock. Tomorrow night, check out local rock band Days Drive at Rudyard's. Originally from New Orleans, but transplanted to Houston after Hurricane Katrina, the Rebirth Brass Band always puts on a horn-filled funk show - catch them at the Meridian Friday night. Songwriter/guitarist Anne McCue lands at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar Saturday night. The alt/rock band Brand New is playing two...

The Dynamo Dynasty? Yeah, that sounds pretty good. The Orange are headed for their second consecutive MLS Cup appearance after shutting out the Kansas City Wizards at Robertson Stadium on Saturday night. However, the win did not come without a high cost. Forward Brian Ching, who has been one of the cornerstones of the franchise since its arrival in Houston last year, went down with a calf strain in the 69th minute with the game...

Tonight, catch Soviet-born Regina Spektor and her unique "anti-folk" style at Warehouse Live. Tomorrow, catch Houston's own pop/rock outfit Prodigal Son at Rudyard's. Friday night is a tougher choice: you have Grupo Fantasma at the Continental Club (see our interview with them and win tickets), Ghostland Observatory at Warehouse (more details on them tomorrow), or if you're a club-goer, you may want to catch Paul Oakenfold on his "Greatest Hits" tour at Planeta Bar...

Look, we're gonna make this one real easy for you. No thinking involved. Music. Art. Community. And a scientist who raps about space travel to a power point presentation. See? Simple. Houston, Our Ears Depend on You, this Saturday at Diverseworks, materializes Rice Radio's KTRU's presentation of Ashmathitic Kitty's 4th Unusual Animals party. Huh? See, we told you we were gonna make it simple. Just trust us. Or, just keep reading. DiverseWorks is excited to...

When we’re out and about, rocking and rolling and what not, we meet a lot of people who say, “Gee, I’d really like to be into art, but, I just don’t know about any artists and I get really intimidated when I go to galleries because the attendants can totally tell I don’t know anything about art and I end up leaving in shame, lamenting that my old Monet poster and that STOP sign I...

Good morning, Houston. There's a new weapon in the battle to make Houston the most beautiful city in America: Beginning next week, commercial property owners will have to hide their Dumpsters behind a building, wall, fence, berm or shrub. Officials said they hope the rule — which City Council approved six months ago — will help increase property values and make properties safer (and, of course, prettier). Anyone who violates the ordinance can be...

Into art? How about dance? You like music? Theater? Have a thing for opera? Or maybe you just (pretend to) like “culture” in general to seem smart and hip and urban? Want to impress a date while not knowing a damn thing about the previously mentioned subjects? Boy, does Houstonist have a shindig for you. Tonight brings us Culture Collision II, hosted by a fleet of Museum and Theatre District young professionals' groups, including the...

ArtsHouston Happy Hour at Salud Winery You may remember this event from a few weeks back, when an impending downpour postponed it. We thought it too good not to mention again, so here goes. Sans rain. This evening, join the ArtsHouston staff at Montrose's newest wine bar, Salud Winery (3939 Montrose) from 6 to 9pm. All drinks are $2 off and free munchies will abound. Classical guitar will be provided by James Napier. Salud offers...

Good morning, Houston. Are you registered to vote? Do you need to make changes to your registration? Better take care of it fast: Today is the last day to register or alter your registration if you want to vote in the Nov. 6 elections. Voters in 34 jurisdictions will elect candidates this year, and the state has 16 bond issues on the ballot — and, of course, there are big-ticket items like HISD's $805...
