Yesterday was the second of the Super Tuesdays for this Presidential Election year and included primary elections in Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont. Houstonist could careless about who wins. We're just excited to see the record turnout at the polls. We all win when that happens. Congratulations, Houston, and all you Texans that don't live in our kickass town. According to Wikipedia - stop laughing - Super Tuesday...refers to the Tuesday in February......

Most Memphis Tigers fans consider tonight's game against Houston just another bump in the road to a perfect season, but to Houston head coach Tom Penders, tonight's match-up against No. 1 Memphis could be the key to unlocking their ticket to the NCAA Tournament with an upset win. Houston (18-4, 7-1) travels to Memphis (23-0, 9-0) to meet for the second time in two weeks. Although the Cougars are off to their best start......

The Houston Astros have acquired Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star closer Jose Valverde. In exchange for Valverde, the Astros have shipped Chad Qualls, Chris Burke and Juan Gutierrez to the Diamondbacks. In 2007, Valverde led all MLB closers with 47 saves with a 2.66 ERA. This marks another home run in the Ed Wade era who has made a major overhaul for an Astros team who suffered its second losing season since 2000. "In Jose Valverde,......

Did you hear that Alamo Drafthouse's Rolling Road Show is featuring The Big Lebowski at Copperfield Bowling Center? No? "Well, okay, you're not privy to all the new shit, so uh, you know, but that's what you [read Houstonist] for." The Coen Brothers' follow up to Fargo, The Big Lebowski is the story of mistaken identity involving a slacker and a millionaire. Jacoby Jones is still running. The Texans 3rd round draft pick out of of Division 2 Lane College continues to be the highlight maker for the team this preseason. On Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals in Phoenix, Jones ran back a punt return 80 yards and showed off some ankle-shattering moves in the process. Could Jones be this year's Devin Hester? Too soon to tell, but he could be a Sportscenter staple at this rate.......

If you were inside on Saturday, avoiding the heat and humidity, you had the opportunity to watch the Texans take on the reigning NFC Champion Chicago Bears. Preseason or not, the Texans were no match for the Bears, losing 20-19 at Reliant. Franchise savior du jour Matt Schaub was 3-5 on pass attempts, but he did actually show poise in the pocket in situations that would've made David Carr curl into a fetal position. RB......

We've long known that Houston was a popular place for singles to relocate (and rightly so), but here's some new news: according to this map, we've got more than our fair share of single men. A LOT more than our fair share - that big blue dot = 20,000 - 40,000 more single men than women. Men in Austin and the DFW metropolis suffer similarly. So why the disparity? Creative Class commenters had a few......

The 2007 season for Hunter Pence couldn't be going any better. The Arlington, Texas native was named National League Co-Player of the week on Monday along with Arizona Diamondbacks closer Jose Valverde. For the week of May 14-20, Pence sported a .591 (13-22) batting average with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored. His 1.901 slugging percentage to boast with his .625 on base percentage were tops in the National League. In......

Wandy Rodriguez and the Houston Astros left Minute Maid Park victorious after a 5-2 win in front of 37,230 Sunday afternoon against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rodriguez (1-3) pitched five solid innings allowing only four hits with three strikeouts to record his first victory since July 2, 2006. Carlos Lee put the 'Stros on the board in the the first inning on a RBI single scoring Craig Biggio. The D-Backs would answer back in the......

With all that went down this week, we thought we thought we'd cheer everyone up by giving everyone a double dose of dogs. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions this week at DCist. Like the rest of country, we were floored by the news of so many dead coming out of Virginia Tech, and with so many of the victims and their relatives from the D.C. area, we felt it important to pay......

Spring is when we get busy here in the Ist-A-Verse. Very busy. But, after staying bundled-up indoors all winter, it's nice for us to be out, about, and collecting things to write about for you. Here's a glimpse at what's been keeping your favorite citybloggers busily away from home and out of bed. For LAist, strong winds attacked LA on the same day the Feds raided the Crips. Not to fear, though: the Japanese version......

Heads up, campers. The new Daylight Saving Time rules go into effect tonight/tomorrow at 2 AM. Ain't no thang if you only have an alarm clock and a wrist watch. Roll the hands of your Rolex forward when you stumble out of the pub tonight. Things get tricky if you have a software powered clock, like the one on the laptop you're using to read this or your CrackBerry, because DST starts a couple......

Good morning, Houston. We're beginning today with news that's not happening in Texas, but could have had repercussions in our transportation industry: In Arizona, lawmakers just missed banning truck mudflaps with silhouettes of naked women on them. The ban came in a proposed amendment to a bill regarding the legal height of truck fender splash guards, and it took aim not at racist slogans and busty outlines on mudflaps. "I personally am tired of......

The College Classic is a six-team tournament, held Feb. 9-11 at Minute Maid, and will include hometown teams UH and Rice, as well as Baylor, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, and A&M. All but A&M are ranked among the top 40 college baseball teams, so the tournament should prove to be very interesting. A full schedule of the games......

One of our favorite current albums is Dog Problems from the Arizona band The Format. It’s pure pop goodness from start to finish. The first single, “The Compromise,” seems to be about their experiences with a major record label (yes, we know that’s not a new topic). The video reminds us a little bit of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” but simpler. It’s an explosion of origami and papier mache – animals, plants and robots all......

With voter turnout generally decreasing each year, some government bodies are looking for incentives to get people to vote. In Arizona, they’re trying a million-dollar lottery for voters. In Houston, we had the free flu-shots at some locations for the elderly, until that was shot down. Houstonist doesn’t need an incentive to vote – we educate ourselves on the issues and then go to the polling station to cast our vote. However, we like Under......

OK, thunder gang: another weekend, another football battle. If last week, Houstonist reminded you that Philadelphia had a team of some note, this installment should come as a surprise to none. The Indianapolis Colts are on the short list for NFL’s best teams, and with good reason. They’ve got an absolutely lethal offense, a defense custom-built by Tony Dungy, and oh yeah, possibly the most technically proficient quarterback in pigskin history. Did we mention that they made a serious run at the 1972 Dolphins’ perfect record last year? colts-touchdown-sundae-758137.jpg So, fair readers, it’s mighty unlikely that this Sunday’s trip to Coltdome will yield a Texans’ victory. But that’s not to say it won’t be a game well worth watching, mostly because of the Six Things You Must Know About Indy’s Colts....

Well, we got our first official tropical scare of the year this week. Reagan High School Principal Robert Pambello has resigned amid allegations that he sexually harassed a teacher. Pambello is the same guy who got in trouble in late March for flying the Mexican flag outside the school, and some students say they think that's the real reason he left: Reagan High School junior Jose Louis Cantu, 18, said rumors have been circulating around campus about Pambello's employment status since the flag incident. At the time, students......

The buzz continues on whether or not Roger Clemens will rejoin the Astros for another (partial) season. Seeing the Rocket as a guest at the Texas Ranger’s opening day made us all a little nauseous, but he’s also still in talks with the Red Sox and Yankees, also. As we noted before, the trouble began late last year when the Astros passed on offering Clemens salary arbitration. In a recent interview, Clemens noted, “If......

• Most of us weren't surprised that the No. 2 Texas Longhorns beat the Colorado Buffaloes in the Big 12 Championship game at Reliant Stadium on Saturday. What was a surprise was the score: 70-3. The decisive victory gives the 'Horns their first Big 12 title since 1996 and gives them a chance to earn their first undisputed national championship since 1969. But at this point, the 'Horns might want to think less about flashing......
