Weekend-ist May 29-31: Hedwig, Found films, inflatable sculptures, Joy Dance and Animals

  • The Big Range Dance Festival opens tonight at 8 p.m. featuring new choreographic works by seven different choreographers. There is a second performance Saturday at 8 p.m. On Sunday, at 7 p.m. The Dance Gathering, a show featuring short works 4 minutes and under from 20 distinct choreographers will be presented. Tickets start at $14.
  • Unhinged Productions, a GLBT-friendly theater production company in Houston, finishes it's month-long run of Hedwig and the Angry Inch this weekend. Fans of the film would be remiss not to see the stage version. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 otherwise. Show is at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at FrenetiCore Theater.

Weekend-ist April 10-12: Mango's, Outdoor Shows, Bohemeo's

  • 7 p.m. — Mango's re-opening. The tiny cantina at 403 Westheimer which has been closed since Hurricane Ike has a facelift and new personality. The sign now proclaims it a cafe, bar, live music venue and vegetarian restaurant. Sounds good. It's grand opening is tonight featuring Two Star Symphony, Robert Ellis, I am Mesmer, and The Sideshow Tramps. Cost is $8 after 8 p.m. The website has a full listing of shows almost every night in April.
  • 10 p.m. — The Light Rock Express will be playing the songs your parents loved for free at the Big Top, 3714 Main Street.

On Monday Houstonist posted about Stick Em Up a blog and documentary about the art of wheat-pasting in Houston. Just a few days later, MyFoxHouston ran this hilariously un-ironic story about the "new" form of graffiti plaguing the town, complete with hip music and cheesy color-saturated montages of what must be the sloppiest spray-painting in Houston.

Weekendist March 13 - 15: Boondocks, St. Pat's and AIDS Walk

  • 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. — Don't Fight It monthly DJ night at Boondocks, featuring Dave Wrangler. No cover and free champagne until 11 p.m. 21 and up only, though. 1417 Westheimer.

Craft Night has become a bimonthly happening over at Caroline Collective, and while in it's early stages the event was mostly an excuse for crafty types to get together and work on personal projects, it's now become a more community-minded event, with local arts organizations offering creative how-tos, and local creatives offering their skills for those organizations.

Back in February of this year, Houstonist attended a screening of the 1983 ground-breaking documentary Style Wars, as part of the MFA's "Movies Houstonians Love" series. The film, presented by one half of UGK,Bun B, was screened to a sold out crowd of Houstonians, and was followed by more than an hour's worth of conversation surrounding Houston's underground music and art culture, that was co-led by Style Wars star and DJ legend, Kay Slay....

So we've heard a lot lately about the city's attempts to clean up graffiti. Given that, it's not surprising — kind of dumb, but not surprising — that a weekend graffiti-art event is ruffling some feathers.
