Houstonist Bites: Chilosos Taco House

140507_chilosos_outside.jpgWe recently tried out Chilosos Taco House as part of our never ending search for the best breakfast tacos in Houston. Owned by two sisters, Chilosos Taco House is located in the Heights on 20th Street near Studewood. This unassuming villa opened recently (within the past 6 months) and serves up some amazing (and cheap) Mexican food. The menu is neither extravagant nor complex, but instead offers the a quick alternative to the standard Tex-mex restaurant.

Chilosos has six varieties of breakfast tacos, all of which are $1.35 (add $0.30 for additional toppings). As we walked up to the counter to place our order, we were greeted with a smile and could see the fresh tacos being prepared in the background. We opted for one bacon, egg, and cheese (for comparison purposes) and one chorizo, egg, cheese and guacamole. Although there were no chips and salsa to munch on while we waited, we did enjoy the checking out the house's decor.

140507_chilosos_taco.jpgThe house is split into two main "dining areas", each was a little limited on seating. We sat close to the entrance to people watch. As our order number was called, it dawned on us that we hadn't paid anything yet (Could Houstonist be that cheap?...). But it was clarified later that you pay at the exit. We generously prepared each taco with plenty of nameless hot sauce (a condiment on the table) and chowed down. Much like the menu, the tacos were no nonsense - just the facts. One slight variation on the typical taco is the toasted tortilla (a nice touch). Each taco had the ingredients well mixed, which made for tasty bite after delicious bite. After devouring the tacos, we realized that the house was full of people...guess the secret is out about this gem. We paid our $5 tab and headed for the door, when we observed the pending notice of a liquor license. The only thing better than a good taco is one paired with a frosty alcoholic libation. No doubt we will be back to this taco house in the near future to try out the lunch tacos or enchiladas.

Those tacos sound really good. I no longer live in the Houston area so I don't have great Mexican places like Houston does. I've been around the country and I firmly believe that Houston has the best Mexican Restuarants in the USA.
One place that I went to almost daily (1983-86) was La Mexicana on the corner of Montrose Blvd. & Fairview. Great breakfast tacos at 7:30 AM ! I was in heaven!!
I would recommend that Houstonist give La Mex a try. They also would have killer chili rellenos on Fridays.

we live around the corner from Chilosos and cant say enough about it. for the price its pretty good food and the tortillas may be the best i have eaten. this sisters are also very nice. all in all a good little joint. helps that i can just walk there too.
