Details still murky in case of misplaced infant

111607_isiah.jpgWe were really happy yesterday when we heard that Isiah Ramirez, the 2-month-old kid whose drugged-out mom lost him somewhere between Houston and San Antonio, had been found in California. But it didn't take long for our feelings of relief to turn into feelings of "Wha?" And apparently, we're not the only ones wondering exactly what happened this weekend that led Isiah on his bizarre cross-country trip.

What is known: 24-year-old Veronica Ramirez, Isiah's mom, left her home in San Antonio early Sunday morning with Isiah, bound for Houston. When she got back, she didn't have Isiah's car seat and diaper bag — and she also had managed to lose Isiah himself. Ramirez told her family that she didn't remember what had happened to the baby; authorities said she acted like she was under the influence of narcotics. No one knew where Isiah was until yesterday, when a couple in Buena Vista, Calif., turned him in to police there. They said they were traveling from Florida to California when they ran into Ramirez at a rest stop. They talked, and they said Ramirez offered to give Isiah to them — so, naturally, they took him.

What's not known: A lot. Authorities are still trying to figure out exactly where Ramirez went — she apparently intended to go to Houston this weekend, but no one's sure whether she ever made it. She had a receipt from a fast-food restaurant in Columbus, but she said earlier the thought she handed Isiah off to the California couple at a rest stop (though she had no idea where it was). It's not clear why the couple in California kept quiet for so long — they only notified police after an Amber alert was issued for Isiah. Among the bizarre details: Some of Isiah's clothes were found alongside I-10 in Fayette County, about halfway between Houston and San Antonio.

Ramirez is now in a psychiatric treatment facility while authorities try to piece together an account of what she did this weekend. Meanwhile, Isiah is in the custody of California child welfare officials. Authorities in San Antonio will decide whether to file any charges against Ramirez or the California couple, but this case is odd because Ramirez apparently gave her kid away, whereas most missing children ran away or were kidnapped. "That's rather unusual," Bob Walcutt with the Laura Recovery Center told the Chronicle. "That doesn't happen often."

I bet she sold the kid for a tank of gas, some pork rinds and cash for crack! What a messed up story.
