Your chances of being caught running a red light just went up: The city's 10 newest red-light cameras go online today, bringing the total number of cams to 20 — not quite halfway to the city's goal of having 50 cameras up and running by early next year. The initial batch of cameras began operating Sept. 1, and since then they have caught more than 3,000 traffic violators, according to HPD:
"They've proven what we suspected, the seriousness of the problem of people running red lights - just disregarding them, potentially putting others in harm's way, and not obeying traffic laws," HPD Sgt. Michael said in a statement today.
For the record, you really shouldn't run red lights. But if you do, make sure you're not at one of these intersections, all of which have new cameras: East Freeway at Uvalde; West Loop at Westheimer; Sam Houston Parkway at Beechnut; Sam Houston Parkway at Bissonnet; Southwest Freeway at Hillcroft; Southwest Freeway at Westpark; Southwest Freeway at Chimney Rock; Southwest Freeway at Fountain View; South Gessner at Beechnut; and Tomball Parkway at FM 1960. If you end up getting caught by any of the red-light cameras, you'll get a $75 citation, which you have 45 days to pay or request a hearing about. But there's something fun in all this: If you do get caught, you can watch the video of yourself running the light online. Technology is amazing.
