If you're in the habit of sneaking through red lights, enjoy your lawless ways while you can: The installation of Houston's first 10 red-light cameras is almost finished, and the system is expected to go live Sept. 1.
The cameras are located at Milam and Elgin, Brazos and Elgin, Pease at La Branch and Travis at Webster in Midtown; Richmond at Dunvale, Richmond at Hillcroft, Bellaire at Wilcrest and Harwin at Hillcroft on the southwest side; JFK at Greens near Intercontinental Airport; and Bay Area Boulevard at El Camino Real in Clear Lake. The locations have changed slightly since the initial set of 10 was announced in early June, perhaps because of a late June ruling from state Attorney General Greg Abbott that allowed cities to install cameras at TxDOT-controlled intersections. We're not sure how much the ruling factored into Houston's decision, but three of the original locations — Bingle at Pinemont, Hillcroft at Westpark and Bellaire at Fondren — have disappeared from the early list. Officials said they chose the intersections from a list of the city's most dangerous.
A month-long public education campaign on the cameras will begin this week, according to the Houston Business Journal; for more on the system, check out the Chronicle's February interview with HPD's Martha Montalvo.
