Sleeping driver causes freeway pileup

080206_asleep.jpgWe're thinking we should start a Houstonist driving school sometime. It's not that we're the best drivers on the road, but we know we must be better than people like the driver who decided to nap on the North Freeway last night, causing a five-vehicle pile-up.

It happened on the North Freeway near Little York, where police say a sleepy driver decided to stop his car and, according to KTRK, sleep in a lane of the freeway. Motorists reportedly knocked on the guy's window to try to wake him up, but before they could, people started running into each other: First, two cars crashed while trying to avoid the sleeping motorist, and then an SUV came along and slammed into the sleeping driver — we guess the SUV driver didn't try to miss. But an 18-wheeler driver did, and instead of hitting any of the wrecked cars, his truck crashed into a guardrail and flipped.

Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt, but we hope someone told that first driver that freeway lanes really aren't the best places to grab a cat nap.

Update: KPRC reports the sleepy driver may have been under the influence of a drug.
