Ninja sword-wielding man keeps robber from getaway hearse

062306_ninjahearse.jpgWe never tire of pointing out how news is sometimes stranger than fiction. The latest example comes from Conroe, where a home invader was arrested Wednesday while being held at bay with a sword — while he was trying to make it to his getaway hearse. No kidding.

It apparently started shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Stone Ridge Apartments in the 200 block of I-45 when 27-year-old Jason Eugene Murrell knocked on a resident's door, claiming someone was having a heart attack and needed help. When the resident opened the door, police say Murrell began hitting her with his fists, knocking her to the floor, and then took her purse and ran away. A second resident said she was putting groceries away when her kids began screaming; apparently, Murrell had entered her apartment and stolen her purse, but the kids scared him off. At some point, he knocked on a third door, but the resident checked the peephole, saw Murrell and didn't let him in.

Another resident who saw the crimes called 911, then picked up what the Conroe Courier called a "small ninja sword" and ran after Murrell. Murrell seemed to be trying to make it to a black hearse parked nearby, which police believe was his getaway car, but the driver seemed to have gotten spooked and took off without Murrell. The resident held Murrell at swordpoint until police arrived. Murrell's in custody, but police haven't found the hearse or its driver yet — there was no information on the make and model of the hearse and no description of the driver other than that he was a black male. Anyone with information should call Conroe police at 936.522.3200.
